Re: Question about maxima leader material

I use Chameleon (the brown stuff) for all my leaders. It is stiff and pretty durable that makes leaders that turn over very nicely. For tippet I do switch over to Orvis Super Strong, mainly because...

Re: Increased acceleration during cast

Don't over do cocking the wrist and the snap at the end. Joe Humphreys, a noted Pennsylvania fishing instructor, recommends a quick squeeze of the last three fingers of the casting hand at the end...

Re: Strike Indicators .... the good the bad and the ugly !

Neat to see an old ice fishing trick for detecting light biters used in flyfishing! We used to make just a few turns to give us an indicator that was much more sensitive than a spring tip or bobber....

Re: Fiberglass confusion

I think you will be surprised that the rod probably can handle a fairly wide range of lines. You would adjust your casting stroke to the line. I am guessing that a 7 wt line will bend the rod down...

Re: Steelhead Fly Swap 2015

Larry, in past swaps they just taped the envelope to the out side of my box with the return flies inside. I put enough postage on that envelope to send everything back to me in the box I provided....

Re: Technique for dense foliage

Billygoat check out some of the single hand spey casting techniques and the trout two handed rods for speycasting. The Wulff Ambush lines make excellent singlehand spey casting lines, like Ard says,...

Re: The best caster

Most of the good casters I know got that way because they also fish the most, so I think the best casters are usually the best fishermen if taken as a whole. By best casters I mean that not only can...

Re: Disadvantage of side arm casting?

:D Yeah, you do have to be a little of a contortionist to lean way over. I don't lean sideways all the way to the water, just enough to angle off the plane of my cast and get under the branches. ...

Re: Disadvantage of side arm casting?

I don't know all the mechanics of flycasting but I will say that if you are comfortable casting in an overhead plane then you can easily cast "sidearm" but simply tilting your upper body over...

Re: St Croix Legend Ultra is back

I have the five piece 5 wt Legend Ultra and I would say it is a moderate fast rod. It has plenty of reserve power in the lower sections, so much so that I use a 5 wt line for the most part, but in...

Re: Budget reel

If you are going this route suggest you look for a 1492 model especially if your rod is under 8 ft length. If it is a 9 ft. then a 1494 might balance it a little better. Great reel even if you have...

Re: Salmon/steelhead rods. weight and length

Where will you be doing most of your fishing? It might help you dial in on the best rod depending on your location. Here in OH, PA, and NY I use 10 ft 6 wt and 8 wt single hand rods, and a 13 ft 7/8...

Re: Distance.... A question for us "older" casters

Huntschool,
I agree with the observation that the premium rods in most manufacturers line are their fastest rods. With that being said, it is no wonder that younger flyfishers go for the fast rods...
