Re: Fly fishing doesn't have to be expensive

Better gear is only advantageous to one that knows how to use it. Can the number one tennis player in the world play as well with a $10 racket. NO but he can still beat any intermediate player...

Re: Snakes!

Yea buddy....I have never been afraid of bears....but then I don't fish Alaskan rivers. Bear attacks odds increase greatly when one fishes certain areas. Same with snakes or even brown recluse...

Re: Beware! They will even take your fishing gear as 'colateral.'

Put the blame where it belongs. Congress......years ago the interest limit was 18 % as I recall. Which is terrible in my opinion. Then it was increased to 21%. Then the conservitives decided to get...

Re: Carp ??

I hear ya Booone0.....I spent a few mid days casting to some carp in a small river that flows thru a city. Water was clear and the fish were easy to spot in the mostly shallow areas. Some were quite...

Re: Anything wrong with uplining a small creek rod.

I also fish short rods mostly but at far longer distances. ......If you are fishing at 20 to 30' by all means there is no problem over lining your rod. Even 2 or 3 line weights should be fine. I...

Re: My First Time

to the OP....There is a nice fly club in NSB that is quite active and has a sizeable membership. I visited them 3 or 4 time during my short stay a couple of years ago. Other than during the meetings...

Re: line selection

fly fishing 35' deep is not very practical. As I read many of the threads in the forums most fly fishing is done at 20 to 30'. It sounds like most would be jigging with a fly rod at 35'.......Fly...

Re: Newbie looking for help :)

I have been fly fishing off and on since the late 60's and I still use what many call beginner outfits. I have a TFO Signature that is my main graphite rod that I use probably at least for 90% of my...

Re: 3wt short stick

No apology needed. I am pretty thick skinned anyway. I would like to add that I would like to spend a day on the creek with one of the high end glass small rods. It might convince me to order one.

Re: 3wt short stick

I am sorry Horsehead if I insinuated the Eagle Claw is a better rod than some of the current top of the line glass rods. I don't believe I actually said that if will re-read my statement. I will also...

Re: Is there a fly from your past?

I'll bite....a small 1/4" popper for sunfish...I have substituted a craft foam spider. I still use the popper once in a while just for giggles.

Re: the other rods?

I would suggest that you just make a decision for the day on the water and take one rod. Indecision can paralyze;)

Re: Are We Over-Thinking/Over-Engineering?

I am basicly a minimalist. I carry a small to medium shoulder bag with 2 or 3 fly boxes. Nail clippers attached with string. Mostly cheap and old rods and reels. Some glass and some graphite rods and...

Re: Fiberglass confusion

I will say that I started on glass about 45 years ago. The vintage glass rods do tend to be slow and bent into the cork. Most are 2 piece and the rule was 8' in 6 to 8wt. There were a few 5wts and...

Re: Smallmouth rod Help.

there is not a lot of difference between a 6 and 7. If you can throw it with a 7 you will probably be able to throw it with a 6 so name your poison. The rod is mostly determined by the flies and your...

Re: 3wt short stick

I have 3 short rods that I fish over 90% of my time on sweet water. A 6' 2wt and 5wt graphite and a 6 1/2' 3wt glass rod. I personally find the short rods much easier and much less tiring to fish. I...

Re: New to fly fishing for larger species-equipment help

A 7 or 8wt should work fine for smb and river pike. You don't need an expensive reel with a fine drag. Most cheaper reels today have sufficient drag for your targets..

For sunfish and crappy I...

Re: Have any good poaching bust stories to share?

Wolfglen...how sad and a great illustration of the fact that government is no longer for the people and by the people. IMO the biggest fraud Florida has pulled was to put a man in the presidency by...
