Re: 8.5 or 9 ft for a 4wt?

I'll be curious to hear what you think of the H2. I test cast the 8 1/2' 5 wt mid flex H2 at a show last winter, and I thought it was delightful.

Re: 8.5 or 9 ft for a 4wt?

You and I seem to like all the same rods. I guess I ought to check out the NRX! (Except I've already got a 9x4 IMX and I don't really need to replace it.)

Re: 8.5 or 9 ft for a 4wt?

Yes, that is the point the Orvis designer I mentioned back in post #8 was making. To get those extra 6 inches you can't add more tip because you have to maintain a taper and it's already as thin as...

Re: 8.5 or 9 ft for a 4wt?

I've got that one too, but mine has a CFO III. When I bought it the Orvis guy said it was their most popular rod for Pennsylvania limestone creeks. I think it was Orvis's competitor to Winston's...

Re: Best Streamer Rod Under $300

Wait a minute, is $300 your budget for the rod only, or the whole outfit?

Re: Choosing my next rod

You won't use a shorter 4 as often as your all-rounder 5, true, but you will have more fun with it in the situations that call for it. It will do things the heavier 9 footer just can't do as well.

Re: Best Streamer Rod Under $300

Get a used Orvis Hydros Tip Flex or a Sage Z-Axis. Better than anything new on the market for $300.

But if you do want to buy new, I think the Temple Fork BVK is a pretty good one. I would also...

Re: 8.5 or 9 ft for a 4wt?

I've got the same model WT but with the "standard" cork grip. It's a beauty.

Back to the original question: I was reading an interview with an Orvis rod designer a few months ago saying that a...

Re: Choosing my next rod

If your 5 weight is a 9 footer, I would suggest a gentle action 4 weight that is 7-8 feet. It will give you extra capability for small-stream fishing and delicate presentations. In contrast, a 9...

Re: Looking for a 6 wt

No, but I met a Sage rep at a show last year who said he thought the 9x6 was the sweetest rod in the whole ZXL series.

ZXL is a more moderate action so it's not going to be the best choice for...

I didn't realize Browning was now owned by Bass Pro. When did that happen?

Re: 10 wt rod for striped bass

I haven't cast it, but I would guess that in your price range the best 10 wt rod available is probably the Temple Fork BVK. I think it's the only one at that price that uses the new nano material in...

Re: G.Loomis 6wt vs Hardy Zenith 6wt

I love both Loomis and Hardy but have not cast the #6 in either model. When you are up in this level of quality, how the particular rod feels in your own hand should be the decisive factor. You...

Re: Time to get my own

There are a lot of good-quality medium-price rods on the market right now, but there are a lot of mediocre ones too. The 2013 Yellowstone Angler 5 weight shootout recommends the 9' 5 wt Mystic...

Re: redington predator?

I have a 7' 11" 8 wt predator and it is really quite stiff -- works better with a #9 line than a #8.

Re: rod selection for first time salmon/steelhead fishing

Any good single handed 9' 8 or 9 weight should do the trick, and if it's your first one, it will be more useful in more situations than a switch or a spey. You should be able to get a very good but...

Re: Fenwick Eagle flyrod inscribed "For Lee and Joan Wulff"

No idea, but it makes me wonder why there aren't more (otherwise) $10 Shakespeares inscribed to Ray Bergman being offered on eBay.

Re: A grim question

A couple of whacks on the head with a rock usually does the trick for me.

In the old days, tweedy gentlemen always carried a tool called a "priest" for head bonking -- so named because it...

Re: My new baby

I don't have a CFO II, but I do have a CFO 123 from around the same time as the rod, currently loaded with DT3. I think the III is the best size CFO for a 5 weight line and this rod's grip and...

I don't have pics but the eBay listing is still up, and it has a bunch of them. (Including one misplaced shot of a butt cap from another rod, Ignore that one.)

Here's the listing: Orvis Vintage...

I do have an older CFO III but right now it's got a WF4 on it. I will either pair it with that or with something black to match the black-anodized reel seat. (For the moment I've got a black...

I think there are two main styles of 6 weight and you need to decide which one you prefer before we can give you helpful recommendations. One is an all-round trout rod that can be nearly (but won't...

Re: Proper maintenance/care for a cork handle?

I clean mine off every year or two with a sponge or washcloth, warm water, and a few drops of liquid dish detergent. Seems to work fine. without needing to oil or treat the cork.
