Re: New to fly fishing for bass

In the last year I have found that many "Saltwater" patterns work great for bass. Both smallies and LM. Crazy Charlie's, Schminnows, and even Crab patterns make great bass flies. I don't really think...

East FL Baby tarpon

I've been reading a lot about juvenile tarpon and how they can be found in the creeks and canals all along east and west FL. Are they hard to find and what size tackle would one suggest?

Re: need advice on bass tornament

Screw calling it cheating. I love the idea of marking the line. I don't use bobbers on my fly rigs but I know some guys do and I guess that's not considered cheating.

Re: need advice on bass tornament

Think about heavy weed guards for your deep flies. This time of year there won't be much for surface plants but there will be tons of slop from last summer lower in the water. Don't spend all day...

Re: Newbie needs help with first set up

Those are a great intro to intermediate level set up. Don't second judge that. Orvis makes really really good stuff. But if you get a chance do some looking around. Scientific Anglers, and Wildwater...

Re: Newbie needs help with first set up

Dar has got that right. Magazines and T.V shows are paid to make everything they mention sound like its the only thing that works. There are plenty of great rods, reels, lines, basically everything...

Re: Newbie needs help with first set up

Re: What are your top 5 bass patterns?

1) the muppet mullet. Its a rabbit zonker style fly with a heavy cone head a stack of elk hair that really pushes the water.
2) clouser minnow in white and yellow or just white.
3) Zimmermans...

Re: Diamondback ION 6 weight

I love echo rods. For smallmouth, and trout on streamers a 6, 7, or 8 weight would all be a fine choice.

Re: Bass PRO HEAT Rods

I let him pick his rod out. He ended up picking out a Scientific Angler Bass package. The man at the shop let him cast one and he like it. Plus he said he could buy a new fly box for all his new bass...

Re: Bass PRO HEAT Rods

I'm actually a big fan of bass pro gear. I bought my oldest a 8ft 5wt cricket fly rod from bass pro shop when he was 7. Matched with a decent line and a simple reel and he was catching small trout...

Re: rods, reels and lines for smallies and such

Another thought, rather than changing your gear to get out to the fish is to look into a float tube, single man pontoon, or even a canoe and using the rods you already have to fish in towards the...

Re: rods, reels and lines for smallies and such

Your line weight really applies more the size fly you are casting rather than the fish you are trying to catch. But there are circumstances that the fish decides your rod size. For some bass anglers...

Re: rods, reels and lines for smallies and such

In my opinion a better choice would be a shorter heavy rod and a more aggressive warm water taper than a spey rod. A 7'11" 8 or 9 wt with a bass taper would allow you to make fast cast with minimal...

I was really sad to see this magazine go. I just started getting into saltwater fly fishing this last year and have my first two trips ever planned for 2014. I received Florida Sportsman instead of...

Re: Nymph Fishing In Still Water

When I first started fly fishing this is the only kind of nymphing I did. Use some size 10-12 bead nymphs. Cast as far as you can, this is a great way to work on your casting. Let the nymph settle...

Im still pretty new to the idea of chasing carp. What size hooks do you guys and gals prefer? I was thinking #4s would be a good place to start. Thanks everyone.

Re: Fishing a popper?

I truely belive that they should be called twitchers not poppers. Once you have hit the water and the ripples go away a very quick suttle twitch is way better than a big loud classic POP. I have...

Re: Crappie on the fly?

Schminnows tied all in black or all in white with chain bead eyes instead of mono eyes and let the fly sink for a few seconds before you start your retrieve. That and clousers tied in pretty much any...

Re: Has anyone targeted flathead catfish?

I have caught a few small flat heads many years ago when I was first getting into fly fishing. Some of my first flys were large woolly worms ( not buggers) tied on size 2 bait hooks. Orange and...

Re: Need Help w/bluegill flies what to make

Small buggers tied all in white. Yellow and red are good. All black, or all brown. Really any color will work. Sizes 8-10 are great.
