Re: Best advice from fly forum members

I start the day with a tippet that's as long as my spread-out arms (about 5-5 feet). It gets shorter as I change flies.

What length were you using before taking RipTide's advice?

Re: Fly reel drag stuck! Any ideas?

If it's like mine, the threads are on that big post. The screw goes into a female thread in the center. The knob onto a concentric male thread.

Re: Fly reel drag stuck! Any ideas?

On the one I have, the drag knob is also threaded, but right hand.

Once the knob is off, there's a 8-9 mm nut that holds it all together.

There's also a little spring-loaded plunger (the...

Re: Fly reel drag stuck! Any ideas?

I have a reel that looks exactly like that (different brand). The screw on mine IS left-handed.

Re: Applying finish on factory label?

I have just one experience with those clear printed labels that come with some blanks.

After I applied the epoxy, without color preserver, the edges of the label curled up and lifted. Made a big...

Re: So.... I'm a bit stuck in a rut.

Oh. Sorry. You see my confusion, though.

There's not a lot of water here, but there are a lot of fish. What you can't see from the picture is how steep this is. It's sort of...

Re: So.... I'm a bit stuck in a rut.

I fish a lot of places that look like this:

Re: New 4 wt. reel considerations ?

I've used this reel on trout in the 3-4# range. It's worked perfectly. The drag is good. It has a nice large knob to change the drag as you're landing a fish.

I really can't find anything wrong...

Re: High end ultra light rod

I have the CT in 7'6" 2 wt. It's a really fun rod.

My favorite in that size range, though, is the Sage ZXL 8' 2 wt. I'd recommend that rod highly if you can find one.

My fishing buddies

In this video, there are three of these guys. Only two are ever in the frame at once.

Where you hear me saying "Hey! Go away!", one of them is swimming right between my legs.

Fishing Buddies...

There was a discussion about this a short while back:

Re: Tippet Ring Knot

I go back and forth between a double Davy and a clinch knot.

If I'm tying it at home, it's a clinch knot. On the water it's a double Davy.

Catch and not Releasing

Maybe you can answer a question.

I fish a lot of really tiny streams. In some of them recently I'm seeing so many small fish that I've begun to wonder if keeping some might allow for better...

Re: Catch and Release...

That looks like a good choice. The holes aren't too big.

The lanyard is just like the Cortland lanyard. I'd get rid of it. They come apart at the metal crimp. You'll probably want a magnetic...

Re: Catch and Release...

Lots of places, even Walmart, sell cheap nets with rubber bags.

The problem with a lot of the cheap nets is that the holes in the bag are too big. The finish leaves something to be desired, but...

Re: Catch and Release...

Is this a net where the bag has fairly large square holes?

If so, I understand what you mean. An even bigger problem with those bags is that 8-10" trout can get wedged in the holes past their...

Re: Catch and Release...

To me, the biggest time spent getting a fish back in the water is where I forget to pinch the barb on a new fly.

Getting a barbed fly out of a fish takes 4-5 times as long as an unbarbed one does....

Re: 1wt distance

50' is very good distance.

I can cast a long way with a 6' 1 wt if I have to, but I try to use it only when I don't have to cast that far.

To me, casting that far with that rod means I've...

Re: Waders for kids?

One pair of Cabela's 'youth waders' (boot foot, felt sole) lasted two seasons for my grandson and one season for his younger sister. They still are in excellent shape. Around $50 as I recall.

Re: Small stream fishing.

I'm with you.

Last week, I fished a tiny wild stream and caught fish that looked like this.

Re: Fishing and lightning

As some others have mentioned, sudden popup thunderstorms can be killers.

Three rivers that I fish frequently have their sources on the slopes of Mt Washington in NH. This small 6,288 ft mountain...
