Re: Airlines and fly rods

I don't have a lot of experience traveling with rods, but will say that 4 piece and up rods have really made it a cinch to travel with. If you have any concerns just pack the rods in their tubes in...

Re: Soft Tip - Crisp Tip

Generally speaking i like a stiffer tip. I think it depends on the waters you are fishing. I need a short stiff rod for the area I fish as there are many hazards, but I like the power when things...

Re: Fly reel drag stuck! Any ideas?

Maybe a lubricant degreaser.
Then you'd have to grease again.
I've had pebbles and grit get in the reel as I imagine many here have. You may have to really fiddle with it. Will the screw...

Re: The Slow Demise of "Honor..."

Sucks that you got stung.
I have always looked upon internet finance as so risky. I always expect a loss whenever I have dealings with the virtual world. People are not always as they seem and...

Re: Trout Fly Rod Arsenal

A 4 or 5 wt vintage Sage RPL would be a nice addition.

Re: I'm gonna need a new name

All this time I was thinking the Chi was a Zen like reference. :D I pictured you doing tai chi and meditation with rod in hand. Ha haaa.

Re: What have you been tying today?

Ahhhhh.......... I see. Thanks for sharing. Didn't know if it was on a spool or if it came in lengths. Interesting stuff for sure. Makes a really greasy looking body.

Re: What have you been tying today?

Really liking the body of that grub. Can you show us a picture of what the material looks like off the shelf?

Re: Tying with the Divine Proportion in Mind

Aren't the white biots suppose to represent the shell the nymph is breaking through or emerging through? It would be in proportion if the biots are suppose to be as long as the thorax and abdomen....

Re: Tying with the Divine Proportion in Mind

Now now don't be a noisy negativist. :p
I'd like to think this discussion and this art form as being a little more deserving than that of a greasy spoon burger. I mean really, ...... this is a...

Re: Tying with the Divine Proportion in Mind

Love your post. And for sure out of the box as well. This is partly the reason I only fish my own patterns. But your point is well made in sometimes the situation calls for unconventional and I...

Re: New to tying and flyfishing

Welcome to the forum Lucas.
Those first flies are quite good. Shorten up the wings a little and extend the bodies right back to the curve in the shank of the hook. Rarely do you see bodies that...

Couple Winter Bombers of my own pattern on 10 or 8 scud hooks.

Re: Tying with the Divine Proportion in Mind

Nonsense eh? I'm not entirely convinced. A well eaten fly's attraction may be in part due to the scent of trout on the fly as well. There is a point where a shredded fly becomes beat too. And I...

Re: Tying with the Divine Proportion in Mind

I'm enjoying all the comments and insights. The idea was to keep it in mind not actually use math when tying. But rather have the dimensions or elements of the fly ie. tail, body, wraps, wing and...

Re: Tying with the Divine Proportion in Mind

How can you be so sure?
Instinctual strikes may be more frequent if the fly falls within the prey's shape and proportions. :)

Tying with the Divine Proportion in Mind

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. Someone told me this once and it came to mind the other day when tying some bombers.

I have always been fascinated with...

Re: Comments on St Croix 8' 4wt Imperial fly rod

I fish the 7'6" 4 wt and love it. Got my Dad the 8' 5 wt. good rod too. These Imperials can outgun many more expensive rods. I think St.Croix's R & D must be good. The blanks and taper seem spot on....

Re: You're stuck on a island...what are the 5 albums you must have

Really hard to narrow down to 5 but I could get a lot of miles from these.
1) JJ Cale: Really
2) Bob Marley: Uprising
3) Best of Mozart
4) Simon and Garfunkle; Live at Carnegnie Hall
5) Doug...

Re: Favorite Movie

Yes on Jeremiah. Love that film. Something really special and forgotten about that movie. It must have the leanest script in Hollywood, but as Jeremiah says,"Nothin' wrong with quiet."

My movie...

Re: Fly line Question

I think most would go for a Weight Forward floating line in the same weight as your rod. Unless you are fishing lots of weighted head flies. Then a sinking line might be better. I think overall a...

Re: What have you been tying today?

Tough act to follow.
sfontin: Such a classic look to those dabblers. I remember seeing a stack of cigarette cards that my Dad had in a box of old stuff. They had many flies in the dabbler style...
