Re: Hairwings for atlantic salmon

#55 is a shrimp pattern called "Life on Mars", originated by Brit Peter Kealey. I too really like shrimp patterns; they fish them often in the U.K. Here, not so much. But we should!

Don't know...

Hairwings for atlantic salmon

I'm doing the hairwing atlantic salmon flies (wets, streamers and shrimps) for Mike Valla's next book to be published by Stackpole next year. The book will cover the spectrum of hairwing flies for...

lol, yup, that mylar is a wonder drug! (private joke, guys). Favorite hook is Gamakatsu T10-6H. Strong, nice lines, nickel finish.

Glad you guys like the flies!

Re: I just like hairwings

Don't know what the piece is that has beaver cuttings on both ends. Picked it up on the Miramichi a year or so ago...just knew I would like to take a pic of some flies on it someday. It's likely...

Re: Salmon finally getting some protection in Canada

I agree with you about the fish farms, but disagree about "blame". I don't feel this is at all about blame; I don't see where anyone is blaming anglers for salmon declines. Rather, I see it as a...

I guarantee that ice dubbing works as a replacement for hare's ear. This is one of the most successful trout flies I tie:

Re: Orvis Customer Service

Leigh H. Perkins, Sr., who bought the Orvis Co. back in the mid-'60's, always had one mantra for his employees: the customer is always right...no matter how wrong he may be."

Re: Orvis CFO Reels worth the money?

Like S&S, I bought my English-made CFO III in the late '70's. It was then, and is now, the only reel I'll ever need for 4, and even 5 wt. lines.

Re: Older Orvis flyrod question?

Shooting Stars were made by Orvis as cane, graphite, and the graphite/boron mix you have. They were intended as salmon rods, for the most part. Yours was made in April, 1988 (0488). I don't...

Re: Questions from Albany NY

Here's a thought: Save up your pennies, and book a day with Rachel Finn at the Hungry Trout on the Ausable in Wilmington, NY. She'll start you out right AND get you into fish.

Google this phrase: where to fish in ny. The first link to come up is the DEC's wealth of info and maps that answer your question rather completely.

I'm sure the most-used fly on the Miramichi is the Green Machine. Never used it, never will.
