Re: 8 or 9wt line on Helios 2 8wt

Then I would definitely recommend an 8 rather than 9 line in a long belly taper, for the 8 weight Helios2. It can probably handle a 9 weight line, but it will just feel better with an 8.

Re: 8 or 9wt line on Helios 2 8wt

The Helios2 has a little more feel but a little less backbone than some competing 8 weights, so it's not going to handle a heavier line as well as they would. I've got one and it is true to line...

Re: Rod and reel for small stream fishing - recommendations?

LL Bean makes a very nice small-stream rod called the Pocket Water. Models include a 6' 6" 3 weight, a 6' 10" 4 weight, and a 7' 6" 4 weight, among others. The complete outfit, including a nice...

Re: Help ID large yellow Mayfly

That sure looks like a Hexagenia limbata. We have them on Lake Champlain in Vermont. The smaller, darker ones were probably the males.

Re: 8 weight Rod Suggestions

Or if price is no object, the Loomis NRX or Orvis Helios 2. The NRX is a bit more powerful for extra-long distance, while the Helios 2 feels a little sweeter and more precise (to me anyway).

Re: What is Scientific Anglers doing with their fly lines?

I wasn't aware that they were discontinuing their current lines (some of which were only recently introduced) until I read this thread. I'm guessing a lot of shops won't be offering clearance...

Re: What is Scientific Anglers doing with their fly lines?

Although buying some good lines on closeout might be a better use of your money.

Re: Ross or Hardy

I suggested the CFO since it's a similar price point to the Hardy and the Ross. TS is right that if money is a concern the Battenkill is a nice choice too. So is the LL Bean Pocket Water.

Re: Ross or Hardy

Hardy over Ross, hands down. But since it's an Orvis rod I'd go with the Orvis CFO II or III reel instead.

If you're gonna get seasick just standing on the dock there's no way I'm taking you out in my boat.

Re: My Grandfather's Fly Rod

Not that long ago I happened to cross paths with Leigh Perkins, chairman of Orvis. He regretted that shifts in demand no longer justify making multiplier reels. He still thought they were the best...

Re: My Grandfather's Fly Rod

Good advice up above, and it's fun if you can match an older rod with a reel of the same vintage, although it can be hard to find a particular model and size when you're shopping for a used reel. If...

Re: Entry level reels?

I haven't seen it myself except online, but if I were shopping for a budget reel this one would be very tempting. Supposedly it has a Lamson drag. I can't think of anything else in the under $50...

Re: In The Aftermath Of The Storm...

Wow, Jerry, glad you're safe and the damage was not a lot worse. (When I read your headline about "the storm" I thought you might be referring to another board meeting at a certain fishing club.)

Re: 9 foot vs 8 1/2 foot 5 weight?

The extra length is better for big water, high wind, long casts, or high-stick nymphing. Inside 45'-50' I find an 8 1/2' more pleasant to cast and a little easier to control. But the differences at...

Re: Help with 4 wt rod

Truer words were never spoken.

Not gonna argue as I've never tried that Imperial. Besides, the same rod will feel different to different casters. (Which is why the first part of your advice...

Re: Help with 4 wt rod

BVK is a fast rod, but 4 weights are more useful for more delicate fishing where it's good to have a lot of feel and control at closer distances. If you've already got 9 footers in #5 and #6, and are...

Re: New Winston - Boron III Plus

It seems to have begun when Glenn Brackett and a few others left the company under circumstances that left doubts in the public square over whether they had been treated fairly and over the business...

Re: Looking for a reel recommendation

If it really is the Lamson drag, that seems like a amazing value to me. I have several #3.5 and #4 Lamsons that have held up well for salmon fishing. My only concern would be whether Cabela's...

Re: New Winston - Boron III Plus

Orvis went through a mediocre period, but I think now, with Shawn Combs doing rod design and Tom Rosenbauer doing marketing, they can hold their own against anyone else. You can't shop for a finesse...

Re: Miramichi July 2015

That second pic of the jumping fish is great! Although not exactly the classic "taut line, bow to the fish" technique.

Re: Cant find rod?

Congratulations! You won't regret it. (But if you do, you can alway resell the Zenith after the closeout sales are over and recover most or all of your money.)

Recon is not Orvis's top of the line offering, but Zenith is Hardy's.

Here's a detailed comparison of more than 2 dozen 5 weight rods. If you click the link for each rod, there are comments by 5...

Re: Cant find rod?

I haven't cast those Access models, but in general, many people prefer 8 1/2' over 9' rods because they can be easier to cast and the extra length of the 9' rod isn't often needed unless you are...
