Re: Fly rod brand of choice: Bamboo rods

Akuriko, earlier today I came across a YouTube video titled "Colorado Cane" - The making and fishing Cane Rods. In it were interviews of a number of cane builders, some you will recognize and one in...

Re: Shapes of cork handles

I like a variety grips. My concern is fit in the hand, similar to choosing a golf grip. My favorites are the modified wells grip that was installed on my Kabuto 4 wt. and a modified cigar on Steffen...

Re: Fly rod brand of choice: Bamboo rods

My vote: Art Weiler. Excellent quality for the price. Beautiful Garrison reproduction 4 WT., 7'3"for small stream and midge fishing is my only boo to date. :thumbsupu

Re: Good Load Bearing Vest?

I have to agree, don't carry so much that it affects your condition. I have seen individuals that look like they are carrying half a tackle shop with them. They probably carry most of it for "just in...

Re: WTB - Trout Net

Take a hard look at the Brodin nets. All hoop dimensions are stated on their website. They are the only nets with the "Eco Clear" bag. The other bags they offer do not have the same properties such...

Re: Great youtube fly tying channels?

I would second Davie McPhail, and add Tim Cammisa and Hans Stephenson. All have excellent instructional videos.

Re: Local Dealer vs online question

I do most of my buying from the only fly shop in my local area. When I have bought a reel from him (several) I have always requested that the it be spooled at no charge and he has always agreed. On...

Re: how long have you been Tying

highcountry,
There you go! I thought that I would be the only one here with that amount of experience. My intro last year ended quickly in disgust when I realized that I was all thumbs. Picked it up...

Re: Net bags?

I will second that. I received a new Brodin Stealth net for a Christmas gift. I have had a Brodin with the conventional knotted bag for 40 years or so and didn't care for the bag for all of the...

Re: Blue Winged Olive Patterns

That's interesting that you say that, I was under the impression that the tiers on YouTube tied the ones they did because they caught fish for them and so recommend the pattern. Another good place if...

IMHO, YouTube is a great place to look. I'm sure that you will find something there. :D

Re: Glass Fly Rod

Longbow, can you tell me what length of Kabuto and also where is W Jude located? Does he have a website? I recently (2014) had Tightloop in Romania build me a 476-3 and really like it. George...

Re: Which brand hooks to buy or not buy?

When I started tying it was suggested to me to buy a common hook. Mustad. When I recently got back into tying I tried Tiemco straight eye #14s and really like them. At this point most of my hooks...

Re: All I do is catch Rainbows!

From where I sit, I wouldn't be complaining. At least you are catching fish. I am also on the other side of the fence as well. I think that I am going to have to break down and plan a trip to...

Re: Sage Approach 5 wt?

I haven't cast the Approach but if it is the "Advantage" with a new label, I would love it. I have a 5 weight Advantage, medium action and don't consider it heavy at all. Very smooth to cast for me...

Re: Rods You Just Can't Part With

My first fly rod...a Browning Silaflex, 7/8/9 weight. Feels like a broom handle compared to anything else I have. Fished it twice and can't bring myself to fish it again. I call it my "ugly stick"! I...

Re: Cree Terror

I find the Cree feather a good substitute for a grizzly / brown combo for the hackle on an Adams. :D

Re: 4wt fiberglass vs graphite

I own and fish both glass and graphite in a 4 weight. Love and enjoy both but tend to favor glass for small brook trout. You have to decide what's best for you. :thumbsupu

Re: 3wt for small streams, dry flies and swinging wets.

IMHO, don't get hung up on the term "discontinued" rods. I have been using a Sage ZXL 7'-6" 3 weight for small streams and rivers and wouldn't part with it. I find the 3 weight a little light in...
