Re: First flyrod bass

Just take care of the knee while in the water. But if it gets painful, catching fish IS a good pain reliever!

Re: Fly sized for blue gill

I usually fish a 2wt rod for 'gills and stick with size 10 & 12 flies. A size 8 (or larger) can get a little difficult to cast on the 2wt, so I use the smaller sizes.
A good set of forceps and...

Re: New rod

I have a TFO Pro 8'0" 2wt and fish it more than any other rod I own. Can't comment on other weights in that model, but the 2wt casts best for me with a line that is a weight heavy. Had a S/A line...

2wt & poppers

Found some old #10 poppers someone gave me a few years ago and decided to see what the bluegills at the local lake thought of them.

Tied one on and a bluegill smashed it as soon as it touched the...

Re: Loop to Loop connection Leader or nail knot

I much prefer a fly line with a welded loop at the end, and a loop to loop connection for the leader. It doesn't hang up in the guides nearly as bad as a nail knot.
I use the perfection loop and...

some 2wt fun

Decided to try the 2wt at the local lake this evening. Tied on a #12 elk hair caddis and the bluegills seemed to think it looked edible. :D

Caught several nice ones (for that lake 8" is huge) and...

Re: If you could only pick one...

My go-to rod is my TFO Pro 8'0" 2wt. I have 3,4,5,6, & 8wt rods (plus an 8wt switch = 11wt), but the 2wt is the rod I fish with most.

I'd guess that one put a bend in even a 5wt rod!

Re: A Fun (and Harrowing) Day On The Water

At least it was a day to remember!

Like that rod holder, someone was smart when they re-purposed that tool!

Re: The Brookie of the Bass family

Looks like fun!
Those look like they might be close to the smallmouth bass in lineage.

Re: First bluegills on a flyrod

Welcome to the addiction! :thumbsupu
Bluegills are my favorite target. I like a 2 or 3wt rod and some of them will have you wondering if the cork is about to explode.

Re: New to Bass Fishing

One of the bass tournament rods might work well. They were designed for the rod length limitations of tournament fishing (my Ross FlyStik rod is 7'11") and has good lifting power to get fish out of...

took an old rod out today

Looking through my rods I seldom fish yesterday and decided to give a Ross 3wt outfit (Ross Essence FS 8'6" 3wt rod and Ross FS 1 reel) a try on some bluegill. Made a new furled leader today (9' w/5X...

Re: White Bass on the fly

That sounds like real fun!

Been years since I've targeted white bass, but I've caught a few when fishing the Ohio river at a warm water discharge in the winter. In my experience they seem to like...

Re: Little Heron Fly Rods

I picked one up from eBay last week (9'-0" 5wt). Not a bad rod, but I have a concern the guides may be slightly undersized. I noticed it is a bit difficult to get line to feed out when roll casting,...

Re: Shirley's first cat's on a fly rod

Congratulations to her!

Nothing like the fight of a catfish. Like trying to pull a bulldozer in.

I've caught a wide variety of fish on the "briminator" fly pattern. Good fly to have in the box.

plenty of bluegills

Went to the local lake yesterday evening to give my new rod a bit more testing. One of the more interesting places to cast from is the face of the (earthen) dam which rises steeply (8-10' high) and...

Re: new fly rod

Thanks for all the congratulations!

That little pond is tough to fish with a fly rod (trees on 3 sides), but has some of the heaviest bluegills I have found locally. A lot of the bass were killed...

new fly rod

Decided to try a new rod this summer. I've been using a 2wt for a couple years now, but wanted something I could throw larger flies with. Found a 5wt (Little Heron 9'-0" 5wt) for a decent price, so I...
