Re: Central TX fly fishing

Yes, there is some good fly fishing here in Centex. A handful of rivers and lots of lakes. The best access for waters around here are by boat / kayak, but there are some areas that are wadable....

Re: which patterns

That's the one. Now that I look at the SBS again, one thing I've done lately is instead of using two pieces of foam I found some thicker foam and use that. So maybe it's a "thick gurgler" instead of...

Re: which patterns

For long and skinny and topwater, the Double Gurgler by Jack Gartside comes to mind. I though I had a photo handy but don't, search his name to find his website and it has a great SBS. It's been a...

Re: Question for bass fishers

When I have a fish hit and miss or get off quickly, as soon as it gets off I'll let the fly just sit there (or slowly sink since I usually use weighted flies) and barely wiggle it to make it look...

Re: A couple smallmouth

Bass on top are a blast. That's a fun video.

I've found that if fish are following your fly but not taking it - I call it "eyeballing" - using something with more flash or more movement can help....

Re: warmwater pics

I could have used a net on this one in the kayak. Gave me a good sleigh ride.

Re: The Tent Thread;

Camping season is upon us, time to get the tent thread going again.
I did a little kayak camping this past weekend. Took the Slumberjack since there was a chance of rain.

Re: South Texas Rig?

In the rivers around here you have a couple species of bass, catfish, drum, Rio Grande Cichlid, all the different bream, several species of carp and suckers, gar, stocked trout and a few thing I'm...

If you live in the hills you may be a hillbilly.

If you live on a river you may be a Riverbilly. :D

Re: Some Fish & Scenery

I do that too, the reel sits in the molded in cup holder between my legs and the rod rest on some sticky back rubber stuff, you can kind of see it in the first photo. Now with the windy season...

Re: accidental catch...

Great fish, man.
I've caught them on 10 foot surf rods before and that's a battle, a 6wt must have been crazy.

Re: Looking for a kayak

Look at the Perception Pescador, around $400 - $500 depending on size. It's actually an older mold of the Wilderness Systems Tarpon that was a $800 - $900 boat.
Also look for used kayaks, people...

shimloom - this trip I took the 5wt and the 8wt. The #5 is a TFO Pro II and the #8 is the BVK. The bigger fish usually come on the #5 it seems.

Some Fish & Scenery

Spring is beginning to spring around here, and the fish are moving around and fattening up. The flow has increased a slight bit, just enough to get the Guadalupe hybrids biting. They're not a real...

Re: A Couple of My Favorite Spots

Thanks all.

Larry - I'm wishing you an early and productive Spring. It'll be in the 80s here this weekend :D, and I will be on the river.

That's interesting that it looks similar to upstate NY,...

A Couple of My Favorite Spots

I like this spot, I can walk down and fish with out having to kayak eight or ten or twelve miles.

Re: Freeze dried meals....

I do several multi-night campouts a year and take freeze dried and MREs.
In my opinion Mountain House is the best freeze dried. I'm not a big fan of the Backpacker's Pantry, especially the...

Re: Odd or even number rods?

When I head out for a day on the river I take a 5wt and an 8wt. I can catch anything on the river with the 5wt, but use the 8wt for big flies or windy days or in the spots where I need to pull bigger...

Re: Tied up some clousers last night

It's hard to tie just one Clouser.:D
I often tie a thin black zonker strip to the hook to add a lateral line on mine. I swear it catchs more fish.
They look good. It's fun to get creative with...

Re: Every been so excited....

That is excited to go fishing.

I can explore river and creek banks for hours and not fish, though I don't seem to do it very often.

Next time.
