Re: Level taper fly lines?

I bought one attached to a Ca. 1960's Pflueger knock off. I haven't used it - I took it off the reel and put WF on it. I haven't tried the reel yet either as my trips have been more pared down...

Re: Using Yarn as an Indicator?

Thingamabobbers are so ridiculously over-priced. I caught some flak last time I suggested this but 260 balloons (the kind for making balloon animals) work great. Latex balloons are biodegradable, can...

Re: Wading staffs ?

My first thought/question here was; Is "staffs" a word? I thought perhaps the plural of "staff" is staves. After looking it up, both staffs and staves are correct, even though my spell check is...

Re: Fly Clubs

I joined the GGACC in SF and loved it. However a lot of its members did not get out to fish but rather enjoyed the events for social reasons. It was still a great resource.

Re: Monster LA Trout

That is also the norm for trout here in Silicon Valley/SF bay. It is sad yet amazing the little natives survive in such stressed water.

Re: Is ferrule wax necessary?

My first rod, an 8'6" 3-piece 4wt. was built by a friend. After a year or two the top piece would occasionally end up in the water when I cast. Ferrule wax solved the problem.

Re: Barbless Flies

Fortunately most people don't agree with this statement. We are bound to scar a fish even with barbless hooks. Wanting to minimize that damage is a good thing.
It takes two seconds to mash a barb....

I love how you've made a couple of them look like old timey hand tinted b&w photos! Nice.

Re: Barbless Flies

Well this is semantics BUT they DO improve the fishing by your own arguements.

What about my right to fish for trout that have not had their lips ripped off? I don't even need to read the...

Re: Barbless Flies

Wow!! I don't think that is the case here in CA. Jeez - that seems a little stringent. I will double check anyway.

I filed the barbs off of a bunch of flies once. I found that mashing the barb was...

I took a closer look at the line with the guy from my local Orvis shop (I keep getting and using the $25 off a $50 purchase coupons - I'll take 50% off all day)

The line is level !! It looks to be...

I use readers to tie on flies and to crimp barbs. I always put them in my vest pocket when I'm done. If I travel light I keep them in a pants or...

Re: Should a beginner use barbs or not?

Indeed Joni!

I use my "forceps" to smash down that barb. Make sure you use a tool, pliers, needle nose, vice, etc., that has a smooth surface. Guys who tie their own sometimes crimp the barb in...

Re: Should a beginner use barbs or not?

Re: Wading boots Sizing question

You should definitely bring your waders into Orvis (or they might have sample neo booties for trying on - I know Simms does at their "stores") and try on the the boots with them on, even if you do...

Re: Suggestion on Simms waders?

I had to get Simms waders - the only waders I could find that would fit my feet. I think they are G3's. I got the custom size 16/17 foot. I love how they fit. My old waders were many sizes too big...

Re: Local Fly Shop or Buy Online?

A world without non-virtual fly shops would be a sad place indeed. I buy as much as I can afford at them. Any new stuff I want I try to get at a brick and mortar shop.

I do support buying used...
