Re: Advice for small streams

Peg,

Thanks for the great tips. I am definetly going to look up some of the flies I am not familiar with and try to tie my best impersonation of them.

I fished North Prairie Lake in Cedar...

Re: SA GPX Mastery Lines, Brand New

WOW what a difference. I am just starting out in fly fishing and bought the Cabela's Prestige line in a 5 wt when they had it on sale for $15. The tip sank and on the second trip out I noticed that...

Re: Allen & Co reel? what do you all think?

I ordered an XL 5/6 wt that I have taken out three times now I have to say it is an amazing reel for the price. I am a newb but can recognize quality craftsmanship when I see it. For being milled...

Re: Boy did I luck out!

Two summers ago I was fishing for walleye and yellow bass on a lake in northern Iowa (with spinning gear). The bite was slow and they allow us to use two rods in Iowa. I was holding one and the...

Re: SA GPX Mastery Lines, Brand New

I ordered one of the 5wt's from Frank on friday, and was at my door on monday.

Thanks for the great transaction and the advice. Can't wait to get it spooled up and give it a try.

Where to go next?

I know I'm pretty new to the forum and fly fishing, but it is safe to say that I am already hooked. What can I say, I have an addictive personality when it comes to my outdooor activities.

So...

Re: First trip of the year/ever (IA)

Went out monday for my 2nd FFing adventure. Water was a bit higher with all the runoff we've been having. Although I layed another goose egg, I ran into another angler who was gracious enough to...

Re: First trip of the year/ever (IA)

Angler,

Thanks for the tips. That day I was planning on heading further downstream, but about the time I was getting ready to start working my way down three or four other fisherman had beat me...

Re: Workshops For Continuing Education For Teachers

Spinner,

Do you know if that is just for Wisconsin teachers or does it apply to teachers from all states?

My dad is a teacher in Iowa (only about 2 hours from Harper's) and I know he hates...

Re: DT for a beginner?

Thanks Rip,

I just was wondering because I am not overly thrilled with how much my Cabela's line sinks at the tip. That won't be so much of a problem when I fish the lakes but it kind of bugs me...

DT for a beginner?

Just started fly fishing and have cabela's prestige WF 5wt on right now. To say that I have room for improvement in the casting department is an understatement of epic proportions to say the least,...

Re: Any Experience with Cabela's Brand Fly Line?

I got the regular prestige in a 5wt with the welded loop and it started sinking after about an hour of fishing. Can't say that it hurt me too bad, but just the same it was a little disappointing.

Re: First trip of the year/ever (IA)

I was just downstream from the hatchery, just past the wall. The area that just gets pounded all year long. I think that added to my enjoyment knowing I got a couple hits in an area that is heavily...

Re: What Are You Doing to Promote Fishing?

I help out with a local program in NE Iowa called Take A Kid Outdoors (TAKO). Over the past couple of years we take kids out and teach them how to fish both on open water and through the ice. I...

Re: Bad new for fishermen from OBAMA

This article seems like a bunch of BS fear mongering to me. Very similar to what landed us in Iraq. I didn't see one thing in that article that outlined anything specific as to how the current...

[QUOTE=raindogt;84767]
By the way (I never followed up, and you may have posted the answer...), what rod did you go with?

I went with the 8'6" St. Croix Triumph in a 5wt. I really...

Thanks Craig,

That is basically the way I figured it had to be but I just wanted to make sure. I initially rigged it so it clicked on the retrieved but quickly relized that I had no drag this way...

A stupid question on reel function

Are fly reels supposed to click just when line is going out or in both directions?

I feel silly asking, but I am a newbie and want to make sure I fully understand.

Thanks

As with most things in life, you just need to ask yourself "What would McGuyver do?" Anyone know where I could get a WWMD wristband?

The fly box that I ordered from Justin at Allen & Co. just arrived today. Very impressed. Rugged, durable, easy access, perfect size, and a good tight seal. I have looked around and I can honestly...

Re: wart home remedy needed

Wrap them in duct tape. Not only does it make you look cool, but it also suffocates the warts which will kill them in time. Cutting them off with your pocket knife does not work, believe me I've...

Re: Advice for small streams

I'm pretty sure you can fish with more than one at a time. I know you can fish with up to two poles at a time. Iowa is mostly put-and-take streams and it seems the DNR is more concerned about...
