Re: $200 Fly Rod Your Choice

One great option available right now is the Winston Passport and VSL, both on clearance for 150-180. I got the VSL 10' 7wt for $160 and I'm very impressed with it. For a slower rod, do yourself a...

Re: Lamson Konic Reel

I fished these reels for 4 years, the only problem has been the frame icing up in the winter. Sounds like you had bad luck, these are great reels!

Re: 10' rod advice

I think the Greys 10' 2wt would be perfect for PA. Small streams and spooky fish, a big 4wt might be too much.

Re: Scott A4 Reviews ?

I have the A4 10' 4wt. It is not my favorite rod to cast, but I fish it more than all my other rods combined. It can roll cast a lot of junk, and works for streamers and dries in a pinch. One of the...

Re: Rods you now regret selling...

My Echo Classic 8' 4wt was my first nice rod, and I didn't realize how nice it cast until I moved on to more expensive stuff. I also miss my Sage LL 4711, but I did make rent AND buy a Greys 6wt I...

Re: Rods you regret buying...

I had a Scott STS 9' 4wt, what a piece of garbage! I sold that to get the E2 9' 4wt. It was barely less of a 3oz hunk of rebar. I have a few Scotts that I can't imagine life without, so this was...

Re: Ideal length for a 3wt?

I use 3wt rods in 5'10", 7'9", 8', and 9'. I use the 9' the most, gets my fly above those Montana weeds. It also high-sticks and daps perfectly, almost like a tenkara. If I were to use one 3wt, it...

Re: 5wt for streamers?

As it is your line carrying the fly and not the rod, try increasing the mass of the line. I like 7wt GPX (7 1/2wt line) on my med FAST 6wt rod for the coneheads. Maybe try something like 6wt...

Re: One rod for Montana

I fish all our local rivers and creeks all the time, and I find myself casting 10-45 feet on all of them. If you can cast 100 feet, you probably can't mend it. I just tied a few Galloup streamers,...

Re: One rod for Montana

There are only a few "big" rivers in Montana. And you don't have to cast any farther on the Missouri than you do on Rock Creek.

Re: You had $150 burning a hole in your pocket...

The original Echo Classic rods were among the smoothest rods ever made. I got one in a 5wt with a USA Medalist 1495 reel for $75 a few years ago. It casts as nice as my Scott G 6wt. I like to find...

Re: Fast 4wts

I use a 9' 4wt for streamers when that is the only rod I have on me. The rod has plenty of power, but 4wt LINE is terrible for streamers at any range. Casting a conehead zonker with a fast rhythm...

Re: TFO BVK 8wt Action

Agreed, I have seriously abused my Loop Xact 4wt the last 2 seasons. Besides a couple scratches from scrambling through boulder gardens, it functions perfectly. The rod has a lot of feel close in,...

Re: Greys Streamflex XF2 10' 5wt.

Czech nymphing is the best way to get fish out of pocket water because of the short drifts and complex currents. The nymphs sink fast and strike detection is better. A fishing spot with bigger...

Re: Beautiful headwater in the Montana backcountry

My whole life I've driven past the Crazies and wondered what it was like in those beautiful mountains. Thank you!

Re: Winter Fishing

I love the quiet of a snow-lined stream in winter. Once you find a fish, there are usually a bunch where it came from. I've found that high-sticking with a long leader is the ticket when the guides...

Re: Just Curious: How Many Fly Rods Do you Own

Just added a Sage 4711LL Graphite 3 for just $300! Can't wait for NEXT SUMMER! Probably going to test it against my Scott 3 weights and sell whichever is the least fun.

Re: Just Curious: How Many Fly Rods Do you Own

The Greys X-Flite 9' 4wt is an awesome rod! I had the same rod, it was great for tossing dries across glassy pools in the Catskills in NY. Definitely not a small water 4wt, but a powerhouse of a...

Re: Just Curious: How Many Fly Rods Do you Own

I've owned around 30 rods over my 18 years of fly fishing. I currently own 9, the other 21 have either been sold or broken.

Re: 3 Rod Challenge

If it were a 1-rod challenge I might go with a BIIX 8' 6" 5wt or maybe a ZXL of the same length and line rating.

Re: 3 Rod Challenge

I know this thread is dead, so I thought I'd bring it back. This all made me realize I already have those 3 rods, and I probably spent a total of $600 on them.

Re: Sage Circa?

Personally I've never felt a huge relationship between fly size/weight and the line rating of a rod. It makes more sense to match the line you are throwing to the flies you need to use. Then match...

Re: tie or buy?

I see fly tying as one of those essential things to fly fishing, just like map reading and knot tying. Fly tying is a great way to really GET INTO fly fishing. It's a great introduction to the...
