So I ended up buying some rio braided loops and just attaching them with a couple of nail knots. It feels strong, but I have my doubts.

This is the saddlebags in the Sierra's it is just to the east of Yosemite on the Tioga pass. It is gorgeous, I just didn't think it really felt like the kind quintessential high altitude lake.
