I'll fish through the winter. In about 30 days I drill an eight inch hole through the frozen ice. I still use flies. I usually add a wax worm to them.

I feel Pocono has it right. You should put the reel on the rod thread up the line through the guides and then see how it balances. you want the center of gravity right at you hand.
