Hatch pools?
I'm reading Clarke and Goddard's [U]The Trout and the Fly[U]. I just finished a section on "hatch pools," but I don't know what a hatch pool is and the authors don't define it. Anybody?

Wading boots?
I'm in the market for a new pair of wading boots. But it's more confusing than I would have expected.
I'm in my mid-60's, so traction and stability are my primary concerns, i.e., I don't want to...

6 wt. nymphing rod
I want a 9'6" to 10' nymphing rod for bigger western water (think tail waters), probably a 6 wt.
I believe the longer length will help me with mending and other line control techniques. I...

Overloading a Sage 99 6 wt....or not?
About 18 months ago I purchased a Sage Z-axis 696 on ebay to be used as a nymphing rod, particularly on bigger waters. I love my Z-axis rods at 9', but have never liked this 9'6" rod. Its end is too...

Re: Fluoro tippets for dry flies
Great feedback! Thanks for the observations and information.
But all this raises another question: Can you tie fluoro tippet to a mono leader?
Thanks.

Fluoro tippets for dry flies
I'd like to hone in on the thread Franzenangler started yesterday. Specifically, what do you think about using fluorocarbon for dry flies, including 16-20?
Now I'm carrying both mono and fluoro,...

Re: What am i doing wrong
Go out with a guide. Tell him or her that you want to learn. It's expensive, but you will probably catch fish and you will learn.

Re: Lets Talk Lens Color
Last year I got a pair of Smiths especially for low light conditions like dusk. They are polarized, prescription, bifocals, and yellow. I found I couldn't effectively tie on a fly at dusk anymore,...

Re: 7 Weight for fishing streamers
I love the Sage Z axis. But my experience with Z axis rods longer than 9' is disappointing. Both my 696 and 810 Z axis rods lack the strong loading action of the slightly shorter rods. I sold my Z...

How important is rod length?
I have an 8 wt. 9' that meets a wide variety of fishing needs. I've read that a 9'6" or better yet a 10' rod is better for steelhead and other river-run fish. You can cover more water and control...

Re: Thinking about a new rod
I like my 8'6" 3 wt. a lot. Perfect for fishing Tricos and small flies, it still has enough length to control your line. Bluegills and other small game fish are a ball.

Re: St. Croix Legend Elite, Sage Z Axis, or ????
I love my 6 wt. Z-axis. While considered a fast rod, it is not as stiff as most fast rods so that you a feel it load. The rod has a tremendous amount of energy. Works well for dry, nymph and...

This quickly becomes a multifactorial problem. My 6 wt. is a z-axis, which I love. But for delicate trico presentations the 3 wt. is wonderful. Maybe the stealth question here is, "What type of water...
