Re: Charlton

You had to send the reel to Charlton for that. It had to do with it being truly sealed but my guess is that Jack Charlton wanted to protect his secrets inside.
For a while when 3M toyed with the...

Re: How light of tippet do you go?

Between the angler, a very smooth reel and a forgiving rod a lot of pressure can be put on a fish even with 7X tippet. I've witnessed too many times people breaking off using the tiny flies that work...

Re: Charlton

I have yet to see a better built and better thought-out reel than the Charlton's.
I used the 8350C as my go-to reel for a number of years... maybe 20? Despite hard duty in all sorts of situations...

Re: Something New Fly Casters Should Know About Rods;

I like true to weight fly rods and dislike 1/2 weight overweight 'crutch' lines made to make that 6 weight rod marked as a 5 weight behave better. Sure the 5 weight Sagè TCR was a rocket and helped...

Re: New casting analyzer?

Download Hudl technique and record yourself with an iPhone or better yet an iPad. It is very cool how it shows the line in motion even without going to memory eating HiDef. You can scroll back and...

Re: Lake Michigan

Keystone XL, Pebble Mine... I guess our friends to the north found out we're for sale cheap. At about 3:00 into this clip you'll get an understanding of why this pipeline is a huge concern.

New casting analyzer?

Some of you might remember the gizmo that Noel Perkins and Bruce Richards came up with that analyzed your fly cast. Noel is at it again with newer micro-electronics and hopefully no Palm Pilot!
This...

Re: Nipper Comparison...just what you've been waiting for!

Did you have a chance to compare the hinges? It seemed to me when looking at the Abel nippers that they went as far as to use bearings instead of bushings. I thought that was pretty neat and helped,...

Re: Practice Rods

I used the Wulff Fly-O for teaching to good success. At a show someone decided to show off their double haul. We blew through two Wulff yarn lines doing that.
Setting up for a fly fishing show the...

Re: Casting 100 Feet while keeping all line OFF THE GROUND ??

Seeing people strip line off with each false cast seems logical and is almost a no-brainer until you stop and consider what comes into play when doing that. Stop at the very end of a back cast and...

Re: A moment of clarity .....

There are so many special moments in fly fishing in my view that I treasure every moment... well, almost every moment I'm chasing fish with a long rod. When fishing isn't in the cards I get joy in...

Re: 100 ft casts, real or fiction?

"Jackster took it for granted when he was here last spring than a 20 knot breeze was considered a calm day."
When that was all we saw for what, 6 straight days and nights so there were no options...

Re: Warning Label - On a Fly Rod...Really?

They also put these warnings on the masts of day sailors. Many launch ramps have power lines near them and the act of rigging up and getting out there can make people forget little details like...

Re: Bass Pro considering buying Cabela's?

Burk, I had dealing with G.M. purchasing too. One of my distributors had the contract for precision measuring tools and called me in their office. They lost the bid and wanted my help in figuring out...

Re: Bass Pro considering buying Cabela's?

We are in the age of an MBA or bean counter sitting at the right hand of the CEO. The bean counter and thus the CEO seem to know three things, cut skilled staff for instant savings to make the next...

I like how you think, Fred.

I have to ditch one of those Masters and am trying to decide which one goes.
I could keep both but with a Presentation and a Norvise I have more than enough vises and...

Re: Why Winston BIIIX on sale?

I guess I've been buying rods the wrong way now too. My best rod/line combo's are from when I found a line I just fell deeply in like with and wanted a rod to mate it with.
We used to have great fly...
