No its certainly not wrong to try a dry fly. Depending on the pressure where your fishing and how picky the trout are, you may want to just tie on a generic attractor like a royal wulff or humpy and...

Try casting farther out from your body. not side armed, but farther down. Cant explain why, but this sometimes works for me when I'm casting bamboo or fiberglass.

I once fished only dries. Then switched to nymphs. Now fish mainly streamers. Scared conventional tackle is up next.
