Re: ? The weirdest...

One early morning while on the ML a gull swooped down and took my shrimp fly and flew off. He finally dropped it and I thought I was home free. On the next cast that same gull caught that fly in...

Re: Snakes.

SC does have gators! We have all those snakes here in middle TN but I seldom have run into any of them thank goodness. I have been told that it is illegal to kill rattlers or copperheads here but...

Re: Ideas on wet-wading shoes?

I used low cut athletic shoes with carpet glued to the sole for years. As stated above small gravel and large sand get in and it becomes quite painful. I went to standard wader boots and I also...

Re: What was your first fly rod? and why fly fishing?

I became a fly fisher years before I knew there was such a thing. As a little shaver I would be soaking worms from the bank of medium sized warm water streams and as the sun dropped I could see the...

Re: Fly sized for blue gill

I'll add my $.02 here also. I am going to talk sunfish which includes several species. I so agree with all of the above but some of it depends on the water you are fishing. I fish a 6' 2wt most of...

Re: Catching numbers of fish

Yes and no......Sometime you can't keep the fish off a fly. Sometimes you can't get them to take a fly. I find the later to be rare but it is usually somewhere in between. Fly fishing is not the best...

Re: #7 line on #8 rod

Wolf is right on......I will add that if you are talking about a vintage glass rod the 7wt line might be just the ticket but on a modern graphite I doubt that you would be happy with the casting...

Re: First bluegills on a flyrod

Eagle Claw sells a 6 1/2' 3/4 wt rod and a 7' 5/6 wt rod and both are a cheap way to get into a light gill rod. I have fished both are a lot of fun on sunfish. 7' is a little more versatile IMO. Both...

Re: looking too possibly try saltwater fly fishing.

I would recommend you not do the salt water thing. You might start throwing rocks at your sweet water fishing and move to the coast. :D:D:thumbsup:

Re: some 2wt fun

Yepper....nice gill. Don't be afraid to tie on some little bigger flies, streamers, and bugs. You might be surprised about how big you can cast.

Re: LM Bass rig

Since you have a 6 I would recommend skipping the 7 and go with the 8. Depending on the size of the bugs you are wanting to cast even a 9wt might be the ticket. It all depends. I would always skip a...

Re: Fishing weedless

It is possible to add a wire weed guard to a larger fly if it does not have one. It would be easier if you had a vise of some sort and a tying bobbin with some fairly light thread. The finished...

Re: Help choose fly gear

I have not read all of your responses. I would also recommend an Eagle Claw but I would tell you get the glass 7' 5/6wt for around $20 and a $20 SA 6wt wf floating line both from WalMart. There is a...

Re: Florida to Wichita!

I would suggest you stop at Reelfoot lake. Rent a boat and fling a fly. It is like no place I have ever fished before. It is possible that there are places like it in FL but I have not seen them. It...

Re: 4 or 5 wt?

I would never buy a rod only one wt heavier or lighter than the one I have assuming I like my current rod. Always skip a weight. After you buy the 4wt you can then go looking for a 2wt for those...

Re: 4 and 6 weight, or just a 5?

Your fishing conditions are far more important than what fish you are targeting IMO and you did not give enough details. I have always stuck with odd wt rods and try not to buy the evens. There is...

Re: beginner needs help

Being an old dog I am quite opinionated. I like moderate action rods and even slow ones but for the salt I want a fast rod to push the wind. If you are a big strong fella I would recommend the 10wt...

Re: Stingray

I actually prefer the '63 split window coupe. ........ I have never caught a stingray but I have cast to a few. Luckily I never hooked one. I won't do that again.

Re: A Fun (and Harrowing) Day On The Water

If you haven't FF for 30 years are you familiar with the difference between graphite and glass? Glass is much more durable and will withstand much more abuse. Graphite can be quite delicate and if...

I don't have a dog in the fight but since you asked I will say "I am not sure you were nasty enough with the new president".

I contracted a fella to pour a new garage floor. I even installed the...

Re: New to Bass Fishing

generally speaking the knot is the weakest link.....Some knots do retain almost 100% of line strength. A poorly tied knot is much weaker than a well tied knot. All mono knots should always be wetted...
