Re: 10' rods a line size up from listed weight?

One more post before I leave for the lake. This video is over 4 years old, but it demonstrates the difference in rod power between the recently discontinued Hardy Zenith and their earlier rod.

Rod...

Re: Heavy Fly Lines

Gary Borger covers fly line design and how tapers affect casting in his book Fly Gear. I recommend it.

Front loaded tapers also called...

Re: 10' rods a line size up from listed weight?

Hi Fireroad,

Remember that you originally said that 10 ft rods were just 9 ft rod extended by another foot and not redesigned over the entire 10 foot length?

Since the casting portion of...

Re: Heavy Fly Lines

I think as the angler becomes more experienced they should get a better handle on what type of rod they prefer and over-lining should not happen.

We get questions on over-lining quite often and...

Re: Estimating fly size or fly hook size

Years ago Gary published and sold the BCS (Borger Color System). The Borger Color System (BCS) was a small pamplet with color chips and data sheets to note the date, time, location, insect stage,...

Re: Heavy Fly Lines

I think the problem is not mislabeling of the fly rod. I think fly rod companies know their rods better than almost any buyer; and I don’t think they would label what they think is a 6 wt rod as a 5...

Re: Estimating fly size or fly hook size

You have learned an important lesson. Don't ask what size fly the angler is using. Ask to see the fly and then you will know what size the fly actually is rather than what you think it is.

Re: The Alabama Rig

My impression is that an Alabama rig will not work for fly casting. I am not going to try to fly cast a coat hanger with a bunch of flies hanging from it. I think you are likely to end up with a 4...

Re: 10' rods a line size up from listed weight?

Please explain why a 10 ft rod that has the upper 9 feet tapered exactly like the 9 ft version should be rated a line size higher?

My opinion differs from yours. Unless the 9 ft fly rod is a slow...

Re: Help on buying a youth rig

Kids need a rod that is well designed. It does not have to be expensive but it must have a progressive predictable action that makes it and easy rod to learn with and not a rod that is difficult to...

Re: Rod Feel

With that much experience, you should have a pretty good back cast and forward cast. I would check to see if the amount of load that you feel on the backcast is at least the amount of load you feel...

Re: Rod Feel

As usual I have questions.

1. How experienced a fly caster are you? How long have you been fly fishing?

2. You do not say that you cannot “feel” the rod loading on the backcast, therefore, I...

Re: Pflueger X481

The 6/7 line designation is a DT 6 wt or a WF 7 wt line so you have the correct fly line for the rod. A 6 wt line is a little heavy for trout but since you already have the rod and reel, I think you...

Re: Question about rod and reel cases

This is what I use to carry multiple rods, a DBDunn rod case. It will hold 4 4pc rods.

Re: Eagle Claw Featherlite...Overlining?

I think a person should use the fly line that they find easiest to cast with the rod they have. That is what many newbie fly fishers end up doing when they buy a fast rod action.

However, that is...

Re: Pflueger X481

I have several questions.

What are you planning to fish for?

What fly line weights is the Berkeley reel designed for? What model reel is it?

Is there a fly line on that Berkeley reel and...

Re: Eagle Claw Featherlite...Overlining?

I do agree with Lefy Kreh that there are legitimate reason to under-line or over-line a fly rod. I think fishing short or needing to a cast a heavy fly are the most common “legitimate” reasons for...

Re: Eagle Claw Featherlite...Overlining?

Allow me to pose a question. Is it only me that has noticed more overlining of fly rods in the last 25 years?

If that is true, why is that true?

If it is true, I doubt that it is because there...

Re: Eagle Claw Featherlite...Overlining?

The problem with that simply put video is the purchaser of the Echo 9 ft 5 wt fly rod buys it because he or she wants to use it in a situation that is best fished with a 5 wt line. If you overline or...

Oh, great! Now we get Finnish Spam.

I prefer the British version. Why, you ask. Because we can understand it, and the Spammer can't!

How about trying a nylon scew? Might "grip" the vise stem better?
