Re: More Dopes on Dope Harming Wildlife

I once tried to smoke a salmon, but I couldn't keep it lit.

Re: Knots or Loops

Olden days instruction used to recommend a 10-12" stiff 30# mono section nail knotted to the fly line, then looped or tied to a tapered leader. I still set up new lines this way (though I use furled...

Re: Forbidden Gadgets

Years ago, I picked up a pair of aluminum ski poles and cut the basket off one to use for a wading staff. I used it once or twice but seldom needed it. They've been hanging in the garage since. The...

Re: A question about knives.

I carried a Gerber liner lock on my duty belt for years. (I don't see one just like it in the catalog). It's a 3.5" drop point flat ground blade folder with a rubberized handle. It's adjusted so the...

Re: water based head cement

I've been using the Loon water based head cement "system" for a long time now. I think the "system" used to include a bottle with an hollow needle for applying the cement. It worked really well, but...

Re: Anyone want to donate me stuff for my fly tying desk?

My block of foam tool holder (in fact, the last three) were dumpster rescues of packing material foam. I did precut holes for the jars of glue, hardhead etc, but the tool slots are completely custom:...

Re: fly line stretching

Input from the cheapskate: The "entry level" lines need stretching more often than the pricier ones. Generally, I stretch mine when I discover I've added too much weight to the nymph rig. This is...

Re: Broken rod tip question

Seems like every training day you have to remind everybody, even people who draw and carry M-4's dang near every working day of their life: If you don't lean it (lay it down) it can't fall.

Re: Hooked Finger

My first rod was a composite Shakespeare 8 wt. The combination of this rod, low skill level and trying to cast weighted streamers resulted in an audible wwhhinnnggg noise as the loop closed and the...

Re: Shameful and Lazy....

The Boise library still takes donations, and their annual hurt book sale nets them some cash and keeps them from getting "stuck" with too many books they can't use. You might try calling/checking...

Re: Question on tying flies.

I especially liked "The Orvis Streamside Guide to Trout Foods and Their Imitations" by Tom Rosenbauer, though most tying guides will show you the main bugs that are most available to fish, and the...

Re: How do I tie these on?

I use Lil' Corkies in florescent colors. Every couple of years, I buy and prep a batch by cutting a slot thru the center with an Xacto or a hobby saw, then I paint/marker the "bottom" of the Corkie...

Re: What the heck is it?

Ice fishing is like many other outdoor sports in that you have to be equipped to a certain level so as to be able to enjoy it while being able to ignore the extremes.
The few times I went, my host...

Re: Light weight floattube for backpacking

Do the specs ever say what the bladders are made of? They seem to carefully dance around actually naming the material. Not saying there's anything wrong, the wording makes my cynic nerve tingle.

Re: New (to me) dropper attachment method

I tie everything barbless. I mash the barbs at the vise. Never could tie a knot that would stay put on a barbless hook. Hate the tangles. Gave up on tandem flies years ago for that reason.

Re: Zap a Gap help ? Smoke?

I use Krazy glue brush on: It's a bit thicker than the other styles but will still wick into thread. I find it doesn't dry out in the bottle as much as other types and I seldom have it glue the...
