Re: Line snaps?

I agree with folks that say 5x is unnecessarily light for what you're doing, and that it could be a case of old brittle mono.

If it's breaking off right at the knot, it could also be because you...

Re: Brown Trout Pics

My first ever fish on a wooly bugger... I was beginning to think it was just a big conspiracy. A decent brownie from the Wisconsin driftless:

Re: Cabelas Prestige Plus Intermediate Line

I recently picked up a couple of SA Pro Series Intermediate lines from Sierra Trading post for around $15 with their daily deal flier. They still have it in weights 5-9.

Re: My burden is lifted!

I was terrified before my defense, riddled with anxiety right up until I started walking over from the coffee shop; at which point I calmed right down. Then it ended up being rather enjoyable. Only...

Re: My burden is lifted!

Congratulations. I finished mine a little more than a year ago. It always seemed to me that Dante really should have had a tenth circle of hell... the dissertation.

Re: Stickers and your Fishmobile

I guess I don't see how having a sticker or two makes me any more of a target than I would otherwise be while fishing. If I'm parked along a road near a stream, or in a little dirt parking lot...

Re: Can someone help a young man?

Well, it looks like there are a couple of Class I classified streams in your area, Rosenow Creek and "Unnamed Creek" just on the north edge of Oconomowoc, and Mason Creek just north and east of town....

Re: Smartphone apps

Wisconsin DNR also has an app. It's helpful to find parking and access, and to double check stream specific regs... not that stream specific regs matter that much if you catch and release anyway. ...

Re: Furled leaders: Are they right for me?

I've only ever heard good things about Cutthroat leaders, both the people and the product, and they are a site sponsor, though I've never used them.

That said, I've been exclusively using using...

Re: What companys are fully made in america?

I'm guessing you mean the CT (i.e. Classic Trout) and the model that briefly replaced it, the Tempt... no? I thought all Redington rods were made in China.

Re: Hiking boots

As you've probably noticed, most hiking boots are designed to keep water out, which means they also keep water in.

The exceptions are either pretty cheap boots that don't offer much in the way...

Yeah, MRFC is one of the first places I check when I need something... or even if I'm not.

Re: Ski/Snowboard Rack for hauling rods...

Just bumping this because I'm still curious if anybody has tried this approach and met with rousing success, damnable failure, or some middling middle ground.

Re: Line & Leader suggestions for beginner

To start off with, I'll say that I don't have any experience fishing for carp, so take this with a grain of salt.

As far as leaders go, a lot of us have switched over to using furled leaders. ...

Re: Driving into the Black Canyon

My sister lived in Gunnison for a number of years. I spent two summers there in my early twenties... but, alas, I'd not yet discovered fly fishing.

Re: Finally got around to tying a couple things...

All of the video tutorials on the Pink Squirrel use some kind of dubbing for the pink. It does look like a good way to go. Of course, when I bought the materials for it, I hadn't tied anything yet,...

Re: Finally got around to tying a couple things...

So far I'm having a bit of trouble finding that magical line between, that's not quite enough dubbing, and oh geesh, that's too much.

Re: Finally got around to tying a couple things...

Took a couple more cracks at the Pink Squirrel today, after a couple of stupid mistakes I put together one that might actually be ok, red wire on this one instead of copper, and chanille instead of...

Re: browsing Cabela's and I have a question

I also wouldn't spend that much money on a pair of pliers. I do value quality tools, but it seems like too much. That said, my old man bought me a pair of aluminum fishing pliers for a Christmas...

Re: Rod & Reel Combo for a beginner

That's certainly a good choice, the Lamson Velocity is a reel you'll likely never feel the need to upgrade. Two things to keep in mind. The 1.5 is on the small for a 5wt, you'll only be able to get...

Re: Rod & Reel Combo for a beginner

I don't know much about that rod or reel... but I will toss a couple of other option at you.

Allen is running a deal right now if you buy a Compass series rod with their Trout II reel you get 20%...

Re: Can you recomend a good tying book?

Thanks for all the input fellas, I feel like we narrowed down the field a bit... though the number of options proposed is still a bit overwhelming.

My local Orvis is doing free clinics on...
