Re: Scott S4s or Tidal?

Haven't tried the S4S but I threw the Tidal 7 weight and compared it against the Sage Motive, Winston Nexus, and TFO Mangrove. While it had some speed and power it was by far the slowest of those...

Re: New Hardy SINTRIX Rods

One of the reasons that the Proaxis have that heavy epoxy is they have two layers of wraps. The early prototypes had issues with the guides damaging the blanks because the blanks flexed so much. They...

Re: GLoomis Pro4x ShortStix

The guides I'm referring to in MI are throwing big streamers (5"-8") with sinking heads for trout or Mousing. I must admit that the 7/8 is the one I've been waiting for as a Smallmouth/streamer rod....

Re: Zenith 8'6'' #4

I haven't tried the GVX 8 1/2 4, I have fished and played with the older WT 81/2 4, it is an excellent rod. But the Zenith has a very similar feel but with one difference, far more reserve power. For...

Re: Appropriate reel for my 4-5 wt 7'-9" Bamboo

The Korean Hardy Classics are very good values, and they fit the old spools. I wouldn't hesitate to own or fish one.

Re: Zenith 8'6'' #4

I suspect the 8'6" Zenith 4 is the best under 9' 4 weight ever made. That rod just blew me away casting and demoing when I was the rep. And I own a Winston TMF.

Re: Appropriate reel for my 4-5 wt 7'-9" Bamboo

I'd personally save up and look for a Hardy LRH. It would probably match it perfectly. If money is really the issue you could probably find a used Cortland Retro, the larger size model would be a...

Re: Hardy Bougle MK V 4"

You're just going to have to pound the auction sites, used tackle shops, even the ones in the UK. I run MK IV 4" on my big spey rod in MI, they are great reals. A 4" is probably going for about $800...

re: The bottom line pretty much ?

S & S I think you hit the nail on the head with the biggest disagreement I had with the author. While I would argue there was a period when the improvements were incremental over the last five years...

Re: GLoomis Pro4x ShortStix

I know a couple of guides in MI who run them with heads for streamers and love them. From what I hear I'm considering one at some point.

Re: New lines on old rod

I find that most older graphite rods pair better down sized on line. I have an 8 1/2 Fenwick HMG 7 weight. It cast like a dream with a Rio Gold 6 weight. I would surgest that you try an agreessive 7...

Re: Carp Line

I never have, my two handers handle my Steelhead and Salmon duties. But I suspect that your two hander would turn over bigger Carp flies, and handle the fight of a Carp better than your glass five...

Re: Carp Line

You said "single hand" do you have any two handers? ;)

If not, I guess you make do with what you have. But a 5 weight is really a bit undergunned for most carp fishing. Use is light of a fly as...

Re: Carp Line

I've been using the Cortland Big Fly line (I use to rep them). Cortland also made a Carp line, but I do a lot of Great Lakes Carp fishing where the wind is always an issue. We also hit some real...

Re: Sage Dominion #8 and Hardy Swift Meet The King Salmon Chalenge;

I think the Hardy Swift series were one of the best Spey-Switch rods I've ever tried. I own the 11-7, my main Steelhead rod, and I run a 13-8 for Kings and Big water steel. Both have landed lots of...

Re: 10 weight: Sage Salt, Scott S4, GLoomis NRX

They are all three great rods. I would also suggest the Hardy Proaxis, I have a friend on Scott's pro team who still considers the Proaxis ten the best Permit rod on the planet and he chases them 4...

Re: Up lining or Down lining a fly rod

I personally think if a manufacturer designs a rod that doesn't function without going up a line size that manufacturer has failed the consumer. I get that many of todays faster rods function better...

Re: Need recommendation for a New York salmon rod?

I have a 9-8 Proaxis, and while there is no doubt in my mind it would stand up to the abuse, and is a casting machine, it wouldn't be my first choice for a Salmon rod. If you're looking for an...

Re: Pure Owned Hardy's Future

I would say Pure is a mixed bag at best. They seem to struggle at first but find there footing in the long run. The Pflugger brand has been totally revitalized on the conventional side as has Garcia,...

In fairness, they were 4 years old, that's about the end of the product cycle for a Premium rod these days.

Re: Wind punching Rod/line combos! (8-9wt)

I've never hit a Windy day my Hardy Proaxis (9-8) won't throw in with a Cortland Liquid Crystal. That is a combo that just kills. The key with that rod is get a true to size agressive line. Ask S & S...

The interesting thing is Pure's Chinese reels (Pluegger Trion) comes from the same factory as Orvis's Chinese stuff.

As far as the UL DD's not being SW reels, while I wouldn't buy one if I lived...

Re: 9'~ 7wt. Dedicated Streamer Rod....
