Re: Best fly line for Orvis Helios 2 9ft 5wt

Outside of the Orvis lines, I really like the performance of Rio Gold on the H2 tip flex rods. Does great as an all purpose trout line.

Re: Orvis Recon and H2 tests vs Sage Accel and One

I had an opportunity to demo the Recon this weekend. I cast the 9'-0 4wt.. I really liked the rod. Incomparision to the H2 904 tip flex, this rod has a lot of similarities. As others have said,...

Re: Abel reel choice

The 6N would probably be OK on the G2. In my opinion the 5N is not a great 6 weight reel due to capacity limitations.

On my Radian's which are much lighter than the G2 series is use a 4N on my...

Wink Re: If the Sage One 5 wt is so great .... ??

The 906 Radian may be the best of the entire line in my opinion. I own both a Radian 906 FB and a Sage One 961. I thought the 6wt One couldn't be beat until I fished the Radian 906. Both are...

Re: Thoughts on the Radian #5

Concerning lines for the Radian....Jim Bartschi personally uses Super Dri Elite and feels it's the best and most versatile match for the Radian. He also likes Gold but feels it's just not as...

Re: Abel Super 3N?

Thanks for the reply. The challenge with some of these great reels that Abel and Hatch are making is getting them scaled down for trout applications. I should say scaled down in terms of weight. I...

Re: Abel Super 3N?

S&S,

Did you by chance weigh the new Abel SD yourself? Just curious what an actual weight might be compared to the advertised weight.

Thanks,

Re: Abel Super 3N?

Drag is a nice thing to have when you need it. Trying to palm an Abel Creek to stop a large brown trout a couple years ago caused a tippet break. That was the moment I realized adjustable drag is a...

Re: Abel Super 3N?

I can easily get 75 yards of 30lb backing on a Super 3N loaded with 4 wt Rio Gold. I still have plenty of room left on the spool for clearance with the frame. For trout fishing with 4 weight rod,...

Re: Scott Radian 10' 4 wt

I probably prefer the Perception over the GPX on the 6wt mainly because of the no stretch core. From what I gathered the Xceed seemed to be a 1/2 heavy line like Gold and the Elite was more of a true...

Re: Scott Radian 10' 4 wt

Coincidentally, I have the exact same 3 rods as you. I have been using Rio Gold on the 854 and the 905. Perception on the 906FB and GPX Textured.

Jim Bartschi told me he personally uses Airflo...

Fighting Butts

I am curious to hear opinions regarding the merits of a fighting butt on a 6 weight rod. I recently had a debate with a friend over this topic. I tend to prefer a FB on a 9'-0" 6wt for castings...

Re: Scott Radian 10' 4 wt

I use Rio Gold on my Radian rods. Both on the 4 and 5wt. Last year I tried the InTouch version of Rio Gold and liked it.

Re: Scott Radian 10' 4 wt

The 4N might be OK on the 10' 4wt. I use a 4N on my 9' 5wt and 3N on my 8'-6 4wt Radians. It's a tough call if the 4N will be too heavy or not. You might have to track down the rod and try it out. ...

Re: Abel Super 3N?

My favorite reel is my Super 3N and I use it mostly on a Scott Radian 8'-6" 4wt rod. Expensive but it is really beautiful and functional. I also have a Super 4N that I use on my 5wt but I primarily...

Re: A good 4wt 9ft?

The Orvis H2 Tip Flex 9'-0 4wt was the rod that impressed me the most in 2014. I absolutely loved this rod. I put it head to head against the Radian in the same length and weight and the H2 just...

FS: Sage ONE 691-4

Re: 2015 Yellowstone Angler 5-Weight Shoot-Out

I will certainly not argue with the results in regards to the Scott Radian. I can attest to everything positive that's been said about this rod. Not only is the 9' 5wt a stellar rod but I have...

Re: Rio Gold in touch review

Sweet n' Salt,

I hear you about regular non stretch Gold being a superior line for dry flies. What I have finally admitted to myself doing most of my trout fishing in SW Pennsylvania, is that I...

Re: Rio Gold in touch review

What exactly are those specific differences? I had a conversation with Rio and what I was told is besides the low stretch core, everything else is the same. Taper, coating, weight, etc. I also...

Re: Hatch 4 Plus Finatic on Scott S4 6wt

One other point to make regarding capacity. Hatch grossly overestimates the backing capacity of their reels. I have found this to be be true on the 3, 4 and 5 plus large arbor models.

Re: Reel for a Scott Radian 5 wt

Yes, much too heavy. The Radian 905 should have a reel with a dry weight in the range of 4.5 - 4.8oz to balance with your finger about 1 inch back from the front of the grip.

Re: Scott M Series 9' 5 weight

I was told last year that the M blanks are their own taper. Faster than the G2 but not as fast as the Radian or older S4's. Very nice rods.

Re: Reel for a Scott Radian 5 wt

I have used both a Hatch 4 plus and an Abel Super 4N on mine. I prefer the Abel 4N over the Hatch. They are both about the same weight with the Abel being a few tenths of an ounce lighter.

For a...
