Which Hair Floats Better??

Howdy, folks.

I've been thinking about improvising a mouse pattern out of materials I have on hand (did a forum search here, didn't find a lot of recipes but lots of references to mouse flies).

Re: Reno Area "well kept secret"?

A float tube could certainly even the odds on that pond.

My thought is, it's going to take a lot of time fishing that pond with jigs and spinnerbaits:eek: to map out the cover on the bottom.

Re: finally a weekend off for some fishing

Probably going to try that urban pond in Reno again early Saturday, and possibly go for some sand bass just under an hour away in Washoe Lake Monday. Yard work and honey-dos permitting, of course;)...

Re: Still goin' strong at 83!

At 83, the Dad in question may not have even heard of bucket lists, LOL. I'm just over half his age and I don't use the term!:D

Here's hoping he keeps fishing until 103!

Anybody brought up the...

Re: Reno Area "well kept secret"?

Sadly, I was unable to verify the presence of bass in the Double R Pond yesterday, or any other fish:( I was able to scope the place out, though, so here's my scouting report.

It's probably a...

Re: Reno Area "well kept secret"?

I plan to test that Double R Pond tomorrow. :D

For the fly rod, think terrestrials and buggers should be good? Got a couple of small cray imitations to take along, too.

Re: truckee river NEVADA

Thank you, sir!

Most of my Sierra fishing experience is from further south, say Walker Canyon on vacations since circa 1996.

No familiarity with the Truckee, except where they ripped out the...

Re: truckee river NEVADA

Troutdoorsman,

You sound pretty familiar with the river. If we had had a couple decent winters (or five!) in a row and the temps were cooler/flows better, can you give me and VW Fallon some ideas...

Re: Fishing and lightning

You, sir, are a truly dedicated tyer and angler!:worthy:

Folks, one day life gave Flygrain lemons. He made lemonade, then he tied Little Yellow Stone patterns with the peels left over.

Question Reno Area "well kept secret"?

Howdy, all.

I was recently poking around on the NDOW website, started looking through the 2013 Trophy Fish Program information for Nevada. Rather cool document, lists the waters that produced...

Re: Snake...update...

Thanks for bringing up the point about pet safety, Jim.

Learning to identify dangerous snakes in the mainland U.S.A. is pretty easy. One cobra relative, the easy to spot coral snake (limited...

Re: Was going to go fishing.

Probably smarter to get indoors if able with lightning around. One of the annual severe weather preparedness programs I've seen (The 5th Season, KSWO Lawton, OK) they once mentioned that lightning...

Re: Best fighting fish?!

A lot of the species y'all have listed are ones I've yet to tangle with, so I won't be voting "for" or "against" any steelhead, musky, pike, etc.

One fish I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned yet...

Re: Snake...update...

This thread brings up a great point: anyone who spends a lot of time in the outdoors needs to know what snakes inhabit the area, specifically any venomous ones. Ideally you should be able to tell at...

Question Okay, I Gotta Ask...

Howdy.

Has anybody ever tried a waterproofing spray like Neverwet or Water Defense on dry flies?

::ducks::Hey, don't throw that, hear me out!!:eek:

I suspect that with a conventional...

Re: what stage are you in??

I figured out in the 90's that I'd rather release a caught fish so I might catch it again one day, but grown larger, wiser, and more challenging. I'll fish any species if I get the chance, including...

Re: Alternative Materials

I like the idea of stripping quills with scissors/fingers:) A.K. Best relates his method as soaking in bleach, which makes saddle hackle quills too brittle to tie with according to his experience.

Question Alternative Materials

Howdy, all.

So, I'm finally giving A.K. Best's Fly Box a thorough read after having it for several years.:o

Among many things I've learned already is, think of different materials that will...

Re: Up or Down is One Better Than The Other

I have a lot more experience fishing stillwaters than streams and rivers, and most of my time on the latter to date has been with bait rather than flies.

What I do have is a lot of time on the...

Re: Walker River, NV, and Mason Valley Area

Thanks for the input, man.

I hadn't heard Topaz was low but have heard the West Walker CA side is pretty low in the canyon.

My thinking was along the lines of, maybe below a lake the Walker...

Me, if there was no restriction on tackle, I'd either opt for tarpon off FL, possibly their freshwater kin called she-fish IIRC up in Alaska, or maybe head to southern parts of my native Texas for a...

I'm also trying to learn to switch casting back and forth about equally between...
