I highly recommend you purchase the most inexpensive flyline you can find for yard practice. After a few hours the line will never be the same, and it would be a shame to ruin a line that cost you...

1- practice means do it at home, or a park, but not while fishing. I know lots of guys who've fished for decades without improving their cast, in spite of trying.

You asked for it. Keeping the elbow tucked in goes along with the old British 10 to 2 casting technique. Maybe that method works well with an old buggy-whip, but with modern rods you want to allow...

For enjoyment, when I'm fishing lakes I love having my SmartCast wrist mounted sonar.

But, if I could only keep one item besides my rod and reel, it would have to be bear spray.

I'll probably catch some heat for this, from Nick and others, but those photos are of a Dolly Varden. Arctic Char have a much slimmer caudal peduncle (wrist), and a slightly forked caudal (tail) fin....
