Re: What was your first fly rod? and why fly fishing?

My Dad was my initial influence in fly fishing. He fly fished, so naturally I wanted to try it. I poured through his magazines, catalogs and books to get some base knowledge.

After I made my...

Re: Bought a new vise but...

The Montana Pro doesn't rotate at all. I think some posters may be unaware of this.

Griffin jaws are very well made, and the cam mechanism is a helpful feature. You should have no issue with...

Re: Wanted: Norvise system

I checked my spare set of Norvise mounting bolts for you. The bolts appear to be 1/4-20, since they match the mount the camera. So you want a 1/4" dia hole to clear the bolt threads.

Re: Schlappen vs Saddle Hackle

Schlappen is all "web." The individual barbules are always super soft in texture and want to "marry" adjacent barbules when they come into contact.

Strung rooter saddle varies in characteristics...

Re: Changes in Mustad 9671??

bigjim, the S82 is indeed forged, unlike the classic 3906/B or 3761, but it's also XXX stout. Since not all the fish I hook are over 20" <laugh>, the 3761 is plenty robust for me.

$6 for 50 nice...

Re: Changes in Mustad 9671??

One alternative is to purchase the Mustads one size smaller. The price I see on the Marutos is per 25, not 50. The price difference isn't as heavily in favor of the later. They may both be good...

Re: Can anybody help me identify these flies?

Didn't realize I'm not supposed to put new flies in old boxes. Thought they were refillable.

Re: Considering a new vise

Short answer is no. I think the Regal Medallion is a great vise, but the Revolution isn't a match for the Norvise in terms of being a spinning vise/lathe. The Revolution offers Regal's impressive...

I take it you mean overhead casts. What types of casts or other means will you use to present the fly?

Re: Getting the most out of CDC (stretching?)

When I do use CDC, which isn't all that often, I'm usually tying flies that require most or all the usable fibers. Long time since I tied CDC comparaduns, so I can't quite remember what I did with...

Re: Everyone says good tools

It sounds like you might be a good candidate for fly tying classes. Based on your location, you should have a good offering within an hour's drive.

As for tools, you'll gain a lot by handling...

If you haven't yet reached for the drill...

The holes on the Norvise board are 14" center-to-center, which I've found to be a practical distance. It's far enough apart to keep my hand from...

Re: Bargain hunters STP/Backcountry question?

My suggestion: If you see a discounted item that you really want, don't wait too long in the hopes of saving a few dollars more.

Re: I got new tying stuff!!!!!!!

Just use scissors or a razor blade. A dubbing rake is useful when you want to pull the underfur out without getting the guard hair. For hare's ear dubbing, you want all the guard hair in the mix.

Rods you regret NOT buying

J Kennedy Fisher 8' #5 graphite

Re: Short rods for big flies?

For clarity...
Short rods have less leverage, not more. The rod is the lever, the angler's hand is the fulcrum, and the gamefish creates the effort upon the lever. Reducing rod length reduces...

Re: Thomas & Thomas "Special Dry Fly" Information

Age? My best guess is about 1987 +/- 5yrs
IIRC, T&T offered a small selection of rods named "Special Dry Fly" that varied slightly in length and line weight in the very late 70s. I believe these...
