Re: Small stream Stories and Pictures;

I know, the combination of pressure and no shade on the stream kills it during the day. But my grandmother lived in that valley after she passed the farm to my uncle. And one of the few memories I...

Re: Maryland - Need spot to take Boy Scouts

I recommend the stretch of the Shenandoah River just upstream from the highway 7 bridge in Virginia. Good smallmouth bass fishing, and the river is very easily wadable most of the time. Check flows...

Re: Advice for slow, deep pools.

I usually have different opinions than Silver, but I agree 100% here. I've fished the Driftless a lot, and rarely catch fish in pools like the OP is describing. Especially if the water is as clear...

Re: Small stream Stories and Pictures;

I managed 2 trout at high noon two weekends ago on the Pine, when I was back home in Minnesota. I worked my butt off for those fish, and the farmer was kind enough to give me a ride back to my car...

Re: Observations from fishing one of my favorite small streams in summer.

I see that 'big one in the tails' behavior a lot on relatively unpressured mountain streams, especially in low flows.

I think what's happening is that under low-flow conditions, the majority of...

Re: Problem fishing a dropper

To preface this, I'm referring to fishing small streams for trout in the 8-16" range. I'm not claiming that my opinions apply universally.

I'm going to disagree. To get it out of the way, I...

Use a slow action rod if you have one and slow down your cast.

Re: Tactics for the dog days of summer?

Head north to Minnesota or Wisconsin. The spring creeks don't overheat in the summer. Find trout in the shade and fish morning or evening when the sun isn't shining directly on the water.

Re: How long does it take from your home to the water?

Closest stocked trout is 45 minutes.
Closest tailwater is 1h10 minutes.
But the wild streams I consider my 'home' streams are 2 hours + 30 minute hike.

Long for a day trip, but not terrible. I...

Re: The Driftless gang has been pretty quiet, anybody having any success?

I just booked a trip back to Minnesota the second week of August. I hope the fishing remains good. But even if it doesn't, I still feel at peace in those idyllic meadows and draws standing in cool...

Re: 4th in the smokies

Great report and nice pics. It's amazing how big some of those brown trout can get way up there in the mountains on tiny streams.

Re: What fly did you catch your first trout on?

earthworm.

First on a fly was a 'pale morning dun' according to the cabelas kit. The trout was so dumb, it refused the fly then changed its mind and hit it. I guess you gotta go for the low...

If you keep monkeying around with the net, I'm going to have to just horse this steelhead in.

Re: Route Advice Sought.....

You'll be sick of staring at flat corn fields before you even make it out of Illinois, let alone Iowa and Nebraska. I grew up in rural southern Minnesota, and the cropland is beautiful. You can see...

Have you considered Duluth, MN? If you can stomach the winters, you have steelhead, stream trout, huge lake smallmouth, muskies, and all manner of hunting right there.

Or do what everyone else in...

Re: Places that are world known... but lame?

Tailwaters. Don't get me wrong, tailwaters are fun. But they're not natural and I place a high personal value on fishing natural places.

Re: Best dog breed to take fishing?

Danish Crappie Hound.

They're trained to dive into perspective fishing holes and retrieve game fish. And, due to their size, they can carry a full case of beer in a cooler.
