Re: Aero Bugs

Lots and lots of thread on the hook shank before tying anything in. I even tried super glue on the thread to hold it before tying it in. It still twists. Maybe a heavier thread pulled a lot harder...

Re: Aero Bugs

The only wraps of chenille are at the head. The rest is twisted before tying it onto the hook shank. I guess I could put in a good thread base and then superglue the twist to the shank and wrap with...

Aero Bugs

I tried something new, nothing really new there but I have hit a snag. I had lost my link to here but glad I found my way back after a couple months of searching. Gotta love it when the kids decide...

Re: Making eggs for egg sucking leeches

When I do the hot glue I just put it on after I have tied the leech. Ties everything together and holds it without any worries.

Both of those hot glue eggs have beads under them.

Re: Making eggs for egg sucking leeches

I have an old toy I got as a kid that I modified to turn hot glue to make a perfect egg. Been working on a design that will turn multiple hooks at one time so a person can make a good dozen of these...

Making eggs for egg sucking leeches

I am going to get into injection bait making a little and I am looking for some advice on a couple things.

The first is what color egg would everyone recommend?
Second, solid colors or...

Re: Do we really need so many?

Challenge yourself, leave all 4 at home and fish with others and see what else works. I have forced myself to fish with different flies, lures, jigs, baits and been very well rewarded for doing so. ...

Re: Cheap Flies???

Really depends on what type and what you consider cheap. Have seen them as low as 20/$4 for CHEAP flies and up to $3 each for good quality ones that will last a while and float well.

For me,...

Skimmer snails

Well I gave it a shot and they didn't turn out too bad. Need to work on tying in the foam in front over the peacock.

These are tied on a size 10 curved shank nymph hook. Body is wrapped with...

Re: Things that shouldn't be found on a river

I've seen it from every type of fisher but the ones who leave their bait cups are the worst. I clean up a couple hundred every year on my local spots and I only hit the river 20-25 times.

Spinner...

Re: Clousers

They aren't hard to tie just more difficult to get them to look pretty and right. My few attempts look like clousers just that they are having a bad hair day.

I would have to agree that if I was...

Re: Tapering bodies ??'s

The lead is to make them heavy enough to get down deep when needed. I have tied a few without much if any lead but there are spots I fish really deep and want to get down faster than. I also plan to...

First skaters

Thought I would try hand at tying some skaters. They seem to have come out pretty good. I know chenille will make them kinda heavy when it gets soaked but the color is one that has caught me a LOT of...

Weed eater cord uses

I came across a fly pattern a few minutes ago that has the oddest addition and pattern. It is called a steelhead beetle fly and it was tied with weed eater cord. Nothing too unusual there although...

Re: Great advice and first CJ's

Interesting how different the instructions are. Same result with slight differences.

One thing at a time, I just got a taper. Now I can work on proportions. Although the second instructions there...

Re: Using actual fish skin for tying

Don't spit on it either, saw someone get nailed for that a couple years ago.

Is more for trout and panfish than anything else. But I will make sure that I don't have any in my salmon box when...

Re: Using actual fish skin for tying

Not really looking for tanned skin, kinda want the scent of the skin on the fly. Figured it should work well to add scent to a minnow or other pattern. I know, kinda taboo in true fly fishing but for...

Using actual fish skin for tying

I tried this many years ago and the roadkill thread got me thinking about it again. Has anyone tried to dry fish skin either the actual skin or the fins of fish to use in fly tying? When I did it I...

Re: Roadkill Flies?

I have always wanted to stop and get a bunch of porcupine quills for tube flies and other ties. I am gonna have to find out what the law is for taking road kill. Pretty sure songbirds are off limits...

Re: Great advice and first CJ's

I did a little of everything, flattening the lead, making sure everything was on top, and just taking more time to build up the taper instead of thinking I had it and going too fast.

I need to...

First, thank you all that gave some advice on tapering a body with wire. Even though I am not using the best wire yet the taper finally turned out right.

Re: Reel figured out, now which lines?

300 grain shooting, 30 foot shooting head, a variety to match water flow and depth, got it. HAHA, just a steep learning curve for me.

Will definitely be getting a sinking line for deep fishing....
