Re: Recommendation needed - Medium action fly rods

I haven't been on the forum for awhile, so this may be too late to be helpful, but here it is anyway. I have three Winston WT rods, 2 are 8'6" 5 wts and one is an 8'6" 4wt. They are classed as...

Re: Are high end rods not for beginners?

Once again I find myself agreeing with Dennis and your recent experience proves his point. I would buy the best rod I could afford. Before I spent any money though, I would do as you plan and try...

Fly rod for SW Virginia trout??

My son is moving to SW Virginia near Christiansburg west of the Blue Ridge Mtns. What would be a good all-round trout rod to get him started in that area? I'm thinking of an 8'6" 5wt or a 8'6"...

Re: Fishing experience with the St Croix 8' 4wt Avid fly rod?

Thanks for the input. I did buy the rod. I figured at that price, we should at least keep it in the family. I know St. Croix makes good quality rods and the more moderate action will fit into my...

Fishing experience with the St Croix 8' 4wt Avid fly rod?

In my search for 4 wt rods, I found a new 8' 4wt Avid for just over $100 bucks. Has anyone had experience fishing with this rod? I'm really tempted to pick it up because it seems like such a good...

Re: Something I learned about Fly Fishing.....

This is an interesting thread. I too have been fly fishing for a long time, over 50 years using bambo to the new boron. With rod prices going crazy (Winston's now at close to $800), I've given a...

Re: Comments on St Croix 8' 4wt Imperial fly rod

Thanks for all the good feedback. I did get to cast this rod and it seems to be everything you all say. My local fly shop has some that were built last year, so perhaps I can get one that was still...

Re: Comments on St Croix 8' 4wt Imperial fly rod

I checked the St Croix web site and they say they are made in the U.S.A. I confirmed that with my local fly shop. I was told that they had trouble getting set up in Mexico and decided to build them...

Comments on St Croix 8' 4wt Imperial fly rod

Hi Folks,
Has anyone had experience with the St. Croix 8' 4wt Imperial fly rod? I'm looking for a starter rod for small streams and ponds for my grandson and like the idea that the Imperial is...

Re: 1 man boat options

Colin,
I have a kevlar canoe that I use for small lakes and ponds. It's 17 ft and weighs only 50 pounds. I have it set up with a clamp-on rowing device that includes pontoons that can be extended...

Re: Review of the Hardy zenith 6wt.

Good to hear about the Zenith 6 wt. I'm planning to buy a new 6 wt and am interested in the Zenith, but have not even seen one yet. It will be interesting to get an actual fishing report on it.

Re: best 5wt for 290?

My buddy was looking for a rod and we cast both the Elite and the streamflex XF2 in the parking lot the other day. I was impressed with both rods and I have several Winston and Sage rods that cost a...

Re: Reel to match my new Flight?

MP gave you a great list of good reels. I'm partial to the Ross evolution LT although the Galvan Rush is a solid reel and a great buy. Both of these reels are made in the U.S., have good...

Re: winston wt and sage slt 5 wt compared

I can't disagree with any of the above.

I would only add that the Winston WT 8' 6" 5 weight rod is a bit faster than the same weight 9' rod.

The fast, medium, slow rod action catagories are...

Re: need advice on fly line

The "Rio Gold" works well on that rod and also the "Cortland 444sl wf5f" line works. The Cortland Precision trout wt forward should also do well on the Imperial rod. I would guess there are others...

I have a Watershed 2 and a Ross Evolution LT 2. The spools and reels are interchangable. I just checked when I read your post. We have a Cabela's store here, and I was told, and shown, that these...

Re: What Was Your Best Experience in 2010 Fishing?

My best experience in 2010 was bluegill fishing on the lake with my 4 year old grand daughter last summer. Her laughs, giggles and excitement will continue to put a smile on my face for a long...

Re: New Trout Fly Rod Search

I agree with ausablebrown. The St. Croix Avid is a smooth casting, well made rod that is American made. I would class it as a moderate action. I have also fished with my buddy's St. Croix Imperial...

Re: Help with a new rig

I have fished with my buddy's 6 wt Imperial fly rod and it is a great rod. It's made in Mexico. He and I both have the Cabela's RLS reel and it is a good reel for the money and is really solid. It...

Re: Experienced trout guys: is orange that bad?

My buddy's and I wear orange vests and hats here in the Fall because of several specific deer and elk seasons. I can't say I've seen a real difference in catching fish with or without the Orange...

Re: Winston WT

Glad to hear you love the WT Joan Wulff model. I just ordered one for my wife, who currently loves my IM6 8'6" 5wt. Hopefully, she will love the JWF and I can get my IM6 back!! I have...

Re: Proper Fly Rod balance

I agree with Joni. While I don't think it's "rocket science", a balanced rod/reel will make less work out of casting and make you less tired after the days fishing. I prefer to have my reels...

Jake
It is probably a winston LT model in a 4 weight. They can be purchased new for $695.00. You can look it up on the RL Winston web site or contact the company with the info you have on the rod....
