Re: How long does it take from your home to the water?

Closest stocked trout is 45 minutes.
Closest tailwater is 1h10 minutes.
But the wild streams I consider my 'home' streams are 2 hours + 30 minute hike.

Long for a day trip, but not terrible. I...

Re: The Driftless gang has been pretty quiet, anybody having any success?

I just booked a trip back to Minnesota the second week of August. I hope the fishing remains good. But even if it doesn't, I still feel at peace in those idyllic meadows and draws standing in cool...

Re: 4th in the smokies

Great report and nice pics. It's amazing how big some of those brown trout can get way up there in the mountains on tiny streams.

Re: What fly did you catch your first trout on?

earthworm.

First on a fly was a 'pale morning dun' according to the cabelas kit. The trout was so dumb, it refused the fly then changed its mind and hit it. I guess you gotta go for the low...

Re: July Caption Competition-Sponsored by Allen Fly Fishing

If you keep monkeying around with the net, I'm going to have to just horse this steelhead in.

Re: Route Advice Sought.....

You'll be sick of staring at flat corn fields before you even make it out of Illinois, let alone Iowa and Nebraska. I grew up in rural southern Minnesota, and the cropland is beautiful. You can see...

Re: Dream Location?

Have you considered Duluth, MN? If you can stomach the winters, you have steelhead, stream trout, huge lake smallmouth, muskies, and all manner of hunting right there.

Or do what everyone else in...

Re: Casting flies on a spinning rod. Help please.

One time during a prolific caddisfly hatch, I came across a pair of rednecks who were camped out on the stream for Turkey hunting season. They had spinning setups and weren't catching anything due...

Re: Places that are world known... but lame?

Tailwaters. Don't get me wrong, tailwaters are fun. But they're not natural and I place a high personal value on fishing natural places.

Re: Best dog breed to take fishing?

Danish Crappie Hound.

They're trained to dive into perspective fishing holes and retrieve game fish. And, due to their size, they can carry a full case of beer in a cooler.

Re: Wading boots! Help.

I don't mind the cold and hate waders. And I hike in some rough terrain to fish. So I wet wade with combat boots. Specifically, Air Force boots rated for in-flight operations on the deck of a...

Re: Is Tenkara a fad?

I've been tempted to try attaching a fly line to a spry thin branch or sapling and see if I can catch native brookies that way. I imagine that the lack of any mechanical component appeals to the...

Re: Have you ever forgot...

One time I drove two hours to fish the Shenandoah park. When I got there, I realized I left my favorite rod at home. I had to fish the park with a 9' 8wt tree trunk of a rod. We're talking a place...

Re: 5 wt. vs. 5/6 wt.

I have a 5/6 Phillipson glass rod that straight up did not work with 5wt line. It wouldn't load the rod correctly. 6wt was a touch heavy, but cast very well.

Then I slipped and fell on it,...

Re: Cross country road trip. Vt--Co

The Driftless region is only a couple hours out of your way. Just take 39->90 and you'll cruise right through the heart of the Driftless in MN and WI. Then catch 35 back to 80. It adds 3 hours to...

Re: Small stream Stories and Pictures;

I'm insanely jealous. I love fishing the MN driftless and miss it terribly.

But I have a CGt and it's not a bad rod. But I bought to replace my old Phillipson, and am disappointed with how fast...

Re: Natahala Area this Weekend

To follow up, the resort had a nice little trickle of a trout stream. They had improved a couple pools on the premises and I pulled some very nice 6-9" rainbows out of them. The staff and guests...

Re: Looking for constructive criticism on my approach so far

Add your location to your profile so people can see where you're fishing. A lot of advice is very specific to your region.
