Re: Fly Shop Owners?

Most fly shop owners I have dealt with are first class. They are definitely not in it for the $$$. My favorite is still my local shop. I go in and we talk about his kids and grandkids, and he...

Re: Fishpond Pitchfork Aluminum Clippers

I have several fishpond items and love them, but I was given a pair of these and they are terrible. My $2 cutters are much better at cutting line than these, especially when building leaders or with...

Re: Addiction

The reel:rod ratio is out of balance. One thing that I found is handy is to have extra reels lined up for a rod. For single hand rods I may have a Gold I use most of the time, but I also have a...

Re: Who still uses a vest?

I sure love my guide vest, and the foul weather vest has crossed my mind spring creeks where I only use one box.

Re: Where do buy your materials.

Some good advice on the common sources. They can have great deals on things like trout hooks by the 100. I try to get my stuff local. The Red Shed is my local shop and has great materials for...

Re: A terrible practice day

I am just starting my fourth year with two-handed rods. I learned with Scandi heads but switched to 55' heads last year for my 7 and 8wts. What a difference! Just relaxing with much less...

Re: What's best for my z-axis 590?

I built up a 590 a couple of years ago. I have four or five lines laying around and the gold was by far the best for me and my style.

Re: Becoming Member of 20-20 Club Can Be Challenge

Nice advice in the OP. We have a spring creek here we fish in winter where it is not uncommon to get the 20 -20. One thing I will add based on my experience is that a really good drag has helped...

Re: Excellent Customer service from Monic Fly Line

I bought a couple of their running lines last year for a couple of my reels for two-handers. I like to weld my own loops so called about the shrink they use and they just sent me some. No cost to...

Re: Who still uses a vest?

Now I need to change my response. Vest for trout. Steelhead is just the pockets in my waders or my raincoat. Box of flies, extra leader, spool of tippet, and some pliers. I have my nippers around...

Re: Who still uses a vest?

I have been given a few chest packs as gifts, but always come back to a vest. I will use one of the chest packs if I need to hike in somewhere because it has a small backpack.

I think Joe Saracione helped with the sealed drag model. It will be something if they are as nice as the Saraciones!

Re: Scott vs. Winston

Poppy, the owner of my home fly shop (The Red Shed) has a signature that I agree with. "How you get the line out and fishing is personal preference so as long as it works and is easy no one should...

Re: Sage Rod Chart Begs the debate - which is best?

Like others I have owned many of them, and eventually sold most including a 690 XP and 590 ZXL last year. But I enjoy building up rods and I keep looking for z-axis blanks as it is hard to get...

Re: Abel vs. Hatch Debate

Kind of a strong statement to make, isn't it? I don't think Abel designed the super 4 (which I have two) for tuna. I have two super 4's that are my favorite trout reels for my 4 and 5 wts. They...

Re: Scott vs. Winston

Bottom line with fishing rods is that you need to go and try them out. I think any statements on equipment in fly fishing should begin with "it is my opinion." I have an older 8'6" 2p Winston WT...

Re: How long does it take from your home to the water?

30 minutes to the Clearwater and Snake for steelhead. A bit longer for trout.

Vehicle: I make two or three one-week trips in late-June early July to my favorite cutthroat water about 4h away. ...
