not really

i'm tying with brassie sized wire and it can break just like thread. newbies will be frustrated trying to use wire

teach them with 3/0 thread and a bare hook until they get it down...

the shaft of a starling feather for a size 20 is going to be so fine that it would be pointless to use it. it will break before you can actually wrap it

i would use 1-2 wraps of black ostrich herl...

save yourself $5 and get the skin WITHOUT the head. put the savings into other tying materials

I mentioned brahma hen neck/saddle feathers in a gray color above and should have also mentioned that a brown brahma would be a good substitute for grouse

as gencon mentioned grizzly hen...

1. buy a whiting brahma neck/saddle and learn to tie with these feathers. you will get the same barred feathers as a $35 grade a Hungarian partridge skin at half the price. add a brown...

No you did not invent a new pattern but you did use shackle that was way too long

Pick a shackle that is 1 to 1 1/2 the hook gap
