Hook keep is not needed as there other ways to leave your set up. However I will most always have a hook keeper.

s the thread color fast or will it need a preserver? I would suggest getting a 3/8 rod at lowes or depot and run your test on one of those.

Once you have completed building the rod it will feel different than just a blank. Also builders may alter how the OEM rod is made so as to alter rod feel/performacne.

What about the Winston LT? This rod is the standard in luggage packed travel rods. Also Dan Craft has a very nice quality 6 pc blank. He may have a completed rod for sale.

You may also go into a local shop and use some of their test equipment to find out which line wt works best for you. Of course reciprocate by purchasing the line at that shop.
