Re: First time luck with pike

Wow! While it's something to play and land a > 3 ft pike on a 5wt, I'm even more impressed that you were able to cast the requisite flies and terminal tackle on that rig. We tend to fish big bulky...

Re: What was your first fly rod? and why fly fishing?

My first fly rod -- and my only, until four or five years ago -- was a Cortland fiberglass 6/7 that I bought in 1984 when I was twelve years old. I used a Pfleuger reel that I bought at a garage...

Re: Join fly line to leader

Definitely ditto what's been said about adding tippet.

I'll add to that -- unless you're going to be doing a lot of dry fly fishing, you don't need a wide selection of tippet material either. I...

Re: My buddy wants to spin fish against the grain.

Do you enjoy the time you spend with him?

My oldest and best fishing buddy almost always uses a spinning outfit. He and I learned to fly fish together 30+ years ago, and we've both gone back...

Re: A Newbie's First Fly Fishing Attempt

Yes! I don't think I did that, but I did save the first one I caught a fish on that I'd tied myself. These things matter!

But anyway -- congratulations! It's a wonderful sport, hobby, way of...

Re: For the men who have small children

A fair question!

I'm blessed to live pretty close to good water. Still, when my kids were really little I didn't get out very much. We were living in a place where a five minute walk through the...

Re: Tough Day, But New Personal Best

Cool! Always fun when you hook a real beast, and completely astonishing when you manage to land one. That's one thing that never gets old.

Re: This day will be hard to top

Those are some fat chunky bass. Looks like lots of fun. We'll be getting after that soon enough here, but we're still dealing with cold snowmelt, so ...

Re: Wormy trout! Yuck!

This just in from the state fisheries biologist:

Matt - just took a look at the rainbow trout that you got from the Passumpsic River. Indeed a very heavy infection of yellow grub and I have...

Re: Fall 2014 Landlocked Salmon thread

Those are beauties, Plecain!

I had an unusual and unexpected shot at some salmon last Sunday -- went out on Champlain with a buddy to try for some lake trout off one of the breakwaters. It was...

Re: Fall 2014 Landlocked Salmon thread

So, how'd everyone do? As it turned out I never got back out after them again this fall. Hit my local trout streams plenty more, but one salmon trip was all I clocked this year.

Anyone else...

Re: Best Bass Flies

BigJim, that's a great collection.

There's not that much that bass won't eat if you find them in the mood.

Here are some of the sinking patterns I like.

Sweet, man. The surroundings alone look worth the trip -- and those are some fine fish, too.

Re: Nymphing for big trout?

Yeah, put a nymph right in front of a big trout that's eating nymphs. What makes streamers "easier" is that a big fish will move for a big meal. It's not economical for a four pound trout to travel...

Re: Streamer junkies!

^^ adding to the above -- where the fishing is visual, keep your nerves steady. This time of year in VT I seem to get a lot of long follows, where the trout might hang just inches behind the...

Re: Fishing Streamer water with a small Dry Fly…

Nice!

Now, how did you detect your hookups? Did the line go tight, or could you see the take? Maybe it's just me, but I have a b!tch of a time seeing little dries like that, even on softer...

Re: Wormy trout! Yuck!

Turns out they were very interested in this -- my local F&W tech reported it to the state fish pathologist, and the pathologist dispatched the tech to come pick up the frozen specimen. I'm told it...

Re: Wormy trout! Yuck!

Good idea re: state fish biologist. That hadn't occurred to me, but it probably should have. Thanks.

The good news on that front is, I froze both the innards and the carcass -- only because I...

Wormy trout! Yuck!

I don't keep very many fish, but I'm used to them being kind of nice to eat when I do.

However.

This evening, one of three nice holdover rainbows that came to the fly in a quick session on...

Do what you want, of course, but if it were me --

I'd say everybody gets to choose their fly. Duplicates are OK, maybe up to three? Has to be the effectively identical -- same pattern, same...
