Re: Fishing the John Muir Trail in the High Sierra

Re: Piru Creek (North of LA)

Herl vs. Swords?

I'm getting ready to tie a couple of zug bugs, but I only have herl and eyes. Most recipies call for a sword tail. I've been searching google, but have not been able to find out what the actual...

Re: Couple Beginner tying questions

"For materials all depends on what you are going to be tying, but genearally a good start would be Pheasant tail, dubbing (awesome possum give great buggy flies), some flash material either loose or...

Re: Wet Fly or Streamer?

I'm not sure why I didn't do this before, but a quick trip to some online dictionaries yielded the following:

Streamer
: any large wet fisherman's fly with long streamer feathers, hair, or other...

Wet Fly or Streamer?

Is there a generally accepted difference between whether a fly is categorized as a streamer or a wet fly? My guess is that streamers are larger and have a "flowy" tail (maribou or hair/fur of some...

Re: Fly quality checklist

While I'm aware the fish don't care (in fact they might actually prefer malformed weaklings), I still want to tie a respectable quality fly. This list was inspired by the threads concerning...

Fly quality checklist

I've only been tying for less than a year and am trying to develop a checklist to help me gauge my own flies and those that I find in the shops. Here is what I've gathered so far from various...

Hello from the high desert

I've been tying and fly fishing for about 8 months now and have caught over 100 trout and a couple dozen crappie with the fly rod. I fish about 2-4 times a month in Southern California. My 8...
