Re: It's That Time Again, What Was Your Best Fishing Experience of 2014?

The annual Yellowstone trip had to be tops. Lots of scenery, lots of fish, and lots of relaxation.

Re: Water shortage

He took out the toilet paper before we arrived, so there was none (NONE) when we arrived, and there was no store on the island. We bought some from a nearby resort.

The guy also removed the...

Water shortage

My buddy and I were at a remote camp in Belize, found our cabana, and realized right away that the owner was extremely frugal. He charged for everything, even toilet paper, so no surprise when we...

Very funny. Perfect to watch on a cold, winter morning.

Thanks.

Re: Going downstream or upstream

As Chris said above, it depends on the fish and location.

Fishing the Smokies is always tough, because the fish are so spooky. You must use stealth, regardless of fishing up or down. The small...

Re: A question about knives.

I love all of the posts on this thread.
But it reminds me of a common pattern I've noticed. I'm a knife collector, and am mystified that so many fly fishermen carry China-made knives. In such a...

Re: No Boat! Mobile, AL

Grand Bay marsh is good for redfish. But with no boat, hmmm. Even a canoe might be enough there; can walk the marsh once out in the area.

Maybe Dauphin Island for surf fishing. But it'll be...

We'll come chip you out during the spring thaw. :D

Seriously, be very careful. People die in such conditions.

Re: Fishing & Family - Vacation - Caribbean

If given the choice, I'd stay at Caye Caulker (Belize) rather than Ambergris.
Caulker has fewer tourists, fewer cars, and better food. You ride around in golf carts. Both have similar beaches...

Re: New member: a girl who loves some fly fishing

Welcome.

There are numerous threads herein about young ladies flyfishing, so it's less novel than you might think.

Practice. You need to practice casting. Find places to fish as often as you...

Re: Best Bass Flies

I've never tried them with sinking line. Interesting.
Usually we were catching fish that were right up in the shallows, in grassy or weedy (SAV = submerged aquatic vegetation) areas, so staying...

Re: Best Bass Flies

One of the best flies for early-spring bass is a muddler minnow. Surprising yes, but tried and true. For years we fished with those in shallows of Toledo Bend (Texas-Louisiana) during March and...

Re: Night Fishing

Yes. But not why you think. I research spawning of marine invertebrates. Our research in Belize showed greatest activity of spawning worms and crustacea occurred about 45-60 minutes after sunset,...

Re: Bear Protection

A guy in Wyoming told me an interesting technique. I think he was serious.

If you've got no spray (or peanut butter), remove your shirt and hang it on your flyrod near the tip. Use it to confuse...

Re: Bonefish = backing

Enjoy the fishing.

BTW, wading is much more fun, but can be environmentally nasty and requires good foot gear.

I meant that I lower the rod tip (laterally) after the fish is out 75-100m away to...

Re: Goodbye to YNP for 2014

Really, 201 days?
Bummer. I'll be there June 10th for a couple of weeks of enjoying the Firehole, etc. I'm getting older, so I look forward to these annual trips more every year.

YNP is magical...

Re: Bonefish = backing

100m is common. But once that much is off the reel, you'd better be increasing the drag of the line by lowering the rod (perpendicular to the run). The biggest ones I've caught in Belize run a bit...

Re: Wormy trout! Yuck!

1. DO NOT eat sushi made from freshwater fish, snails, etc. Many parasites in freshwater species that affect humans. Sushi from marine fish is okay (if you have a taste for it).

2. Yes, many of...
