Re: Joppa flat & Plum Island ?

I'm not an authority but I do go to PI and the mouth of the Merrimack now and then. It varies day by day, basically. Some days big fish push bait way up inside the mouth, or blitz right up against...

Re: Fly Fishing Trout Trip VT/NY

Both the Orvis flagship store in Manchester and the American Museum of Fly Fishing on the other side of the parking lot are well worth a visit.

I don't know guides & lodging in the area, but Orvis...

Re: I am on the verge of quitting

Sure, a tweak here and a tweak there, your casting can get better and whose can't? BUT -- there's still the thing about fishing, as in, you need to get on some bitey fish who will eat what you're...

Re: Smallmouths & fly selection -- describe your approach

Hey, just following up on this, just back now from the third and last of my annual forays to northern Champlain where we have situations like the ones I described in the OP -- this year far and away...

Re: Fly fishing idaho

This isn't your neighborhood canal, and it'll take four or five hours to get to the area from Boise, but it's worth mentioning since the fishing was out of this world.

In the summer of 2001 I...

Re: Before the 4th

Great looking White Mountain streams! Some nice fish relative to the scale of the water, too! Over here in VT I've been having about a 95% warm water season, but this makes me think I ought to take...

Re: Am I missing out by not using an indicator?

Yeah.

I probably do more fishing for smallmouths than for anything else, and indicators don't come out much. About the only time is if I'm dealing with super-finicky fish *and* some current,...

Re: Best anchor/trolley system?

What I've done is to put a short painter loop on the bow and another on the stern, clip a carabiner to each of those, and then run a loop of rope from one to the other with a third carabiner in the...

Re: Got one but wanted the other.

Right -- next trip maybe that first swing is a 5" circus peanut or sex dungeon or something similar on a sink tip.

Always fun hunting a big one.

Re: warmwater pics

Here's a decent one from the start of the Ditch Pickle Classic this Saturday. We got into them pretty good the first day but basically got blown off the lake on Sunday. We didn't place this year,...

Re: Boat!

Wicked awesome!

If I were doing it again I'd buy one a lot like that. Any waters that can't get you out on aren't going to be so nice to fly fish anyway.

How's your electronic situation? I...

Go catch a fish, any fish, take its picture, and post it here so we can all cheer for you.

Stay with it, it gets really good.

Re: I am on the verge of quitting

Maybe ... but again, try to think in terms of fishing. There are dozens (hundreds?) of subskills related to fly fishing, and casting gets undue attention because of how visible it is.

Re: I am on the verge of quitting

Roll casting with a full-flex ("slow") rod can be tough to learn.

Then again, roll casting at all has never been particularly easy for me. I've been fly fishing since 1983 and my roll cast is...

Great pics, and congrats to your son.

It's a whole different thing hooking a king in that skinny water, too. Probably the biggest one I've ever hooked was in the Ninilchik, ~1/4 mile above...

Re: Considering Fly Tying

Funny this pops back up ...

The OP never said what he was fishing for, but if he's chasing bass he could certainly save some dough. Those big bugs tend to be sort of pricey if you buy them but...
