dont mind the rain as long as its not a monsoon. a few obvious observations, dont step anywhere you cant see the bottom so consider a wading staff, be conscious of water levels rising and lightning....

Read the book by Kirk Deeter Orvis guide to Carp. After reading that several times I don't cast to cruising carp..why? Cause they aren't feeding.

your absoluetly right... i believe that the only failure in fly fishing is giving up. i can also relate with you about taking years to catch a certain fish, several years into fly fishing saltwater...
