I think that it"d be better to pick up a 7wt and then pick up a cheap sunfish rod. The 7wt should be okay with big poppers, larger streamers(6-2), and 16"+ fish right?

I should also add i will do some fishing the south branch of the potomac which has some decent fish in it

Smallmouth rod Help.

I know there are a lot of threads but i jsut want a definitive answer to my question. Since most rivers below PA and west of the Ozarks contain both decent smallmouth and also plenty of sunfish......

Put a 1-2" grub on a short shanked hook, and use A SINKING TIP! biggest part is the SINKING TIP! its a great way to do it.

im going with the 7wt. its better to be a little over than a little under. plus i have a 5 weight already for smaller fish.

I was thinking that. I might try and tie up some size 6-4 clousers over the winter. I know what patterns I need. Would a 7wt be adequate for 3"-4" size 6-4 clousers? I would like to use the same...

So I'm getting that a fast 6 would be good. I'm just a little woried about the 6 not being able to handle large poppers. I won't throw anything under size 6( I've got a 5 for that) and no more than 1.
