Re: General Discussion for Smallmouth

For sure. I have a 6wt that I keep up in Northern Wisconsin, but find my 9'8wt is my go-to rod for bass and pike. Not always needed, but great for tossing the big flies. Next you'll be eyeing the...

Re: Redington Vapen Black

Judging by your name, I'm guessing you're a Redington fan. Have you cast it? I've not cast them but will be interested in what others write. If you search "vapen" on the forum you'll find some...

Re: General Discussion for Smallmouth

You mentioned fishing the Little Miami river, that makes me think Ohio. Am I right? If so, why not skip the 6wt and jump to an 8wt? You can toss some nice big bass bugs and pike flies, and also...

Re: General Discussion for Smallmouth

If they are willing I'd say topwater - love catching river smallies on poppers and mice. Visual takes, love the sound of a bass taking a surface fly and they are fun to cast as well.

Otherwise...

Re: Sage One: very fussy going back in the tube

Interesting to read the discussion. As I mentioned I did it to myself once, but I wasn't launching a product line, just buying a tube for a single rod. I agree that the oversight doesn't impact how...

Re: Nymphing - indicator or no?

The discussion reminds me of a couple things. One is that, with the exception of posts like Silver's, Spring can't come fast enough :)

The other is something I mentioned above, I fish for fun. ...

As Jaybo mentioned slotted beads and cones help getting around the bend. Allen Fly Fishing sells them.

Re: Nymphing - indicator or no?

I fish both ways. I gauge it by the water and by how I feel like fishing. For me the latter is pretty important since I fish for fun anyways. Sometimes feel like indicators, sometimes not. As for...

Re: 4wt fiberglass vs graphite

Perhaps you have your eye on blanks already, but I thought I'd offer a couple of suggestions that might fit your price range. If you go graphite, check out Ye Olde English Fly Shop. I've built the...

Re: Sage One: very fussy going back in the tube

I have that with one rod I built, ordered a tube a bit too small for the rod. Annoying for sure. I'd think Sage could have made it a bit easier.

Re: Organizing Your Flies

I carry between 4 and 5 for trout:

1. Dries - one side compartment and the other foam
2. Nymphs, soft hackles, etc
3. Streamers
4. Midges / magnetic box for the really small ones
and/or 5....

Re: Who is the guy in NY with all the cheap knock off stuff

I hear he is a character. All my interactions with him have been good but I've heard stories. I do have a couple of his reels and have bought some for others for whom I've built rods. I like the...

As said above, it would be tough. I see some $30 blanks on ebay and you can finds a grip and guides pretty cheap. But you have to add in thread, epoxy finish, etc etc and you'll be north of $50 for...
