Re: Brookie Fishing around Gettysburg?

Maryland has some native brook trout water just west of where you'll be passing through. I've never fished it, though. If you can set aside a half-day for fishing, you won't be disappointed by...

Re: May Report

Are you on the Wisconsin side or the Minnesota side? I find the Minnesota side gets much less pressure.

Re: Follow the rules, I got my first ticket. :(

I was driving about 10 miles over the speed limit on a major interstate, in a pack with 4 other cars. We weren't passing very many cars; everyone was driving about the same speed. A state trooper...

Re: private property along rivers

In Minnesota, you're trespassing if you cross a fence or if you're on agricultural land, even if it's not posted.

Re: Follow the rules, I got my first ticket. :(

The problem with speed limits is that they're often the result of a political process and not the result of a traffic safety survey. If the goal is traffic safety, there are much better and cheaper...

Re: Just got back from fishing the Smokies in TN.

When they're short-striking with that regularity, I usually find out that I've found some warpaint shiners. I think they actually try to sink bugs to get a closer look before biting. If you're sure...

Re: Thinking of signing up for Orvis fly fish lessons, worth it?

Go sooner rather than later, also. I tried to teach myself and it took years of un-teaching before I could actually cast decent. The basics of a cast can be taught in as little as 5 minutes, which...

Re: Hot Weather Wading

I wear rock-climbing pants when I wet-wade and blue-line in NC. They're flexible for climbing over boulders and ledges on high-gradient parts, and they dry instantly.

Patagonia RPS Rock Pants -...

Re: So you caught a sucker/fallfish what do you do?

There are a couple streams in the Shenandoah National Park where the regulations dictate culling every brown trout caught. Reason being that they're invasive and the SNP is pristine brook trout...

Re: The ONE day you forget to check

Where do you live? As far as I know, there isn't anywhere west of I-95 that's further than an hour from wild trout.

Re: Backpacking through Shenandoah National Park

If you're coming from the other direction, the Albemarle Angler in Charlottesville is another good fly shop. It's just a block or two off of 29.

Re: Backpacking through Shenandoah National Park

The western slopes get a lot less traffic because they're not so close to DC. There is excellent fishing everywhere in the park. If it stays wet all year long, it has brookies in it. With 2-3...

Re: Cigars and Fly Fishing

My father told me that the proper way to fish a promising pool was to approach the tail, and then sit on the bank and smoke a cigar while watching the pool. By the end of the cigar, you'd be calmed...

Re: Fly tying saves money?

Fly tying doesn't save me any money. But it does let me wrap lead under the dubbing on my favorite nymph patterns to actually get them down in plunge pools. And I have killer scud pattern that...

Re: Any warmwater species mimic trout in feeding?
