Re: Can't compete with Costco: Sage Blowout Sale

Leland has an eCommerce site and I would guess that this is the only reason they are still in business. They closed their storefront in SF (it was on the same block opposite the Orvis store in the...

Re: Noob: Need help...(Leader & Tippets)

backing on a 5wt is just backing. If a fish takes you into your backing on a 5wt, god help you. I'd imagine if the old backing is solid it doesn't matter. On the other hand, backing is quite...

Re: Dear Sage, Patagonia, etc.. I have no desire to buy a trucker hat.

Yes it is.
As Brady put rather succinctly, however irately:

When 46,000 years old you reach, the key, function will be. The same, the ladies your age will think.

Re: I have a crush on Joni

Who doesn't? Aside from all this fly fishing stuff - she's a hot rock star.

Re: Dear Sage, Patagonia, etc.. I have no desire to buy a trucker hat.

I am not sure WTH a "ponce" is, but you would surely be an extravagant spender (yuppie dooosh?) if you spent $25 on a newly manufactured hat you could get for 99 (recycle an old hat) at a thrift...

Re: Am I a hypocrite, a little selfish maybe?

Water belongs to people. Period. If you don't have access to it you die. If you deny somebody access to it that is called murder.

Re: Dear Sage, Patagonia, etc.. I have no desire to buy a trucker hat.

You missed the point a bit. If you go to any bar in the Mission District in San Francisco you are sure to see at least one or two 22 year old kids wearing one of these, with his handle bar mustache,...

Re: A River Runs Through It.....Still

The movie was great - the book was great. The movie really romanticized fly fishing in quite an entertaining way - the short story (novella?) was much grittier. I fly fished before and read the book...

Re: That big beautiful brown truck arrived today!

You guys are cracking me up!

By the way - when I broke my Orvis rod (superfine trout bum) the Orvis store gave me a loaner and sent my rod back to the shop so I didn't have to pay shipping.

Re: Dear Sage, Patagonia, etc.. I have no desire to buy a trucker hat.

These mesh back baseball hats were first worn by me in the late 70's in little league. You used to be able to find them in thrift stores by the dozens as they were used for promotions. The...

Cowlitz River Trip - pointers, advice, fish stories.

I am flying up to Sea-Tac to meet a great old buddy for a fly fishing trip. He is pretty new - having been to the Yakima and got some casting lessons in recent years (shhh! I haven't told him he is...

Re: Level taper fly lines?

I bought one attached to a Ca. 1960's Pflueger knock off. I haven't used it - I took it off the reel and put WF on it. I haven't tried the reel yet either as my trips have been more pared down...

Re: Using Yarn as an Indicator?

Thingamabobbers are so ridiculously over-priced. I caught some flak last time I suggested this but 260 balloons (the kind for making balloon animals) work great. Latex balloons are biodegradable, can...

Re: Wading staffs ?

My first thought/question here was; Is "staffs" a word? I thought perhaps the plural of "staff" is staves. After looking it up, both staffs and staves are correct, even though my spell check is...

Re: Fly Clubs

I joined the GGACC in SF and loved it. However a lot of its members did not get out to fish but rather enjoyed the events for social reasons. It was still a great resource.

Re: Oak Creek AZ trout?

Beautiful creek and beautiful trout - thanks for posting the link to the blog. Too bad it hasn't been updated since last year. If I am ever in that part of AZ I'll make an effort to get out there for...

Re: Monster LA Trout

That is also the norm for trout here in Silicon Valley/SF bay. It is sad yet amazing the little natives survive in such stressed water.

Re: Is ferrule wax necessary?

My first rod, an 8'6" 3-piece 4wt. was built by a friend. After a year or two the top piece would occasionally end up in the water when I cast. Ferrule wax solved the problem.

Re: Barbless Flies

Fortunately most people don't agree with this statement. We are bound to scar a fish even with barbless hooks. Wanting to minimize that damage is a good thing.
It takes two seconds to mash a barb....

Re: Barbless Flies

Well this is semantics BUT they DO improve the fishing by your own arguements.

Re: Barbless Flies

Wow!! I don't think that is the case here in CA. Jeez - that seems a little stringent. I will double check anyway.

I filed the barbs off of a bunch of flies once. I found that mashing the barb was...
