Re: It's That Time Again, What Was Your Best Fishing Experience of 2014?

This year was a big change for me, with moving from northern MN to SE Washington at the end of June. It was also the first year in over a decade that I didn't get to take a weeklong fishing to MT...

Re: Anyone fishing on Turkey Day?

I'm planning to head out tomorrow and try to catch my first WA steelhead after moving here this summer... Fishing during 55 degree weather in late November will probably be a little nicer than...

If you end up in St Cloud, you'll definitely have access to good smallmouth fishing on the Mississippi. I grew up on the river just north of town, and fished a lot (hadn't started flyfishing yet,...

Re: Steelhead fishing in Washington State.

As a fisherman new to WA, the regulations here certainly keep you on your feet... Lots if different opening and closing days, "emergency" closures, etc. I release all the fish I catch, not just...

Re: Great Lakes Salmon and Steelhead

It's not in MN, but the Brule is a good steelhead river in the fall, and isn't any farther from Duluth than a lot of the North Shore streams.
And not to get too snooty... but there aren't any...

Re: American Journey

Andy -
Depending on which "significant birthday" you are celebrating, and your fitness level, one option you might consider is a trip to fish the backcountry of the Rocky Mountains. Most of my...

Re: Belize is out, Driftless is in - any local advice?

If you're interested in the Brule, also check with the Superior Fly Angler in Superior. That time if Sept could be early for Steel (and maybe late for browns?) and the Brule can get filthy brown and...

Re: Wind below Boysen

This is a river for tossing big articulated streamers. My best success in the Wind River Canyon has been with a S Dungeon or similar in the fall, after the flows have been dropped down. It is not a...

Re: question on an old st croix rod

Does it have a serial number on it? I think all the older Legends do, right?
I've also had good experience with getting quick response from emailing St. Croix directly from their website. They...

Re: My fishing buddy is a snake!

...and unfortunately in the Upper Midwest, we get to enjoy both.

Snakes have always creeped me out. A couple years ago a rattler rattled at me while walking along the Popo Agie in Wyoming......

Re: Suggestions near I-90 MT/ID

Thanks Fred.

I'll be driving my F150 4x4 pulling a 10' enclosed trailer, so nothing major but I don't want to stray too far off my route. I've read a lot about huge snowpack and runoff this...

Suggestions near I-90 MT/ID

Sorry if this is similar to a bunch of other current threads... but looking for some advice based on current water conditions. I am going to be driving from NE Minnesota to Tri-Cities WA next week...

Re: Places that are world known... but lame?

I probably would have agreed with the Bighorn after my first couple visits, but have hit it again the last couple years and love it. Maybe the fish aren't all monsters, but they sure are strong and...

Re: When and where for small mouth?

+1 for the Mississippi in MN, especially between St. Cloud down to the Twin Cities. The Menominee River on the WI border with the UP of MI is also very good.

That sure is a beautiful brown and a great start to spring.

I was down in the Red Wing and Wabasha area this weekend doing some preseason scouting for turkey hunting and a bit of fishing - from...

Re: Remember your first time casting?

1999, in the Plover River in Iverson Park, Stevens Point, WI... I think we cut the hooks off of a flies to practice with since there wasn't any season open, and there aren't any fish there anyway.

Here is one from last year (May)... since it doesn't look like we'll have any warmwater fishing up here until June this year.
One of my fishing buddies and I spent a day on Chequamegon Bay out of...

Re: Headlamps?

Like a previous replay said, "lumens" is a measure of light output from the light. Of course, it's not always apples to apples since the color of the light, whether it is focused or flood, etc can...

Re: Your State Fly Pattern

I think the Muddler is a household name in flyfishing households pretty much anywhere in the country, isn't it? Maybe I only think it is because I like the fly.

I've had pretty good success...

How about the Muddler Minnow for Minnesota? My understanding is that it was developed by a Minnesotan, and can be used across the state for a variety of species just by varying the size and...

Re: How do you buy your deer hair?

It really is neat making flies from fur, feathers, etc that you harvested yourself.

I had to chuckle at myself last spring at how quickly I went from the thrill of fooling a Tom turkey into...

Re: New Mexico / AZ Trip - Feb 2014

I got back from my trip a couple weeks ago and am finally getting around to posting a report. My plans ended up changing some, going a couple weeks later (Feb 22-Mar 3) and flying to and from Denver...
