Re: Jumping in

The beauty of a dryer is I feel it helps you apply a smoother finish on the wraps etc. I bought a couple with different speeds off eBay. I will have to look at my DIY dryer to see what speed I ended...

Re: Jumping in

I grew up in Oswego County, little town called Hannibal. Grew up fishing a couple little tiny creeks that had natural reproducing salmon and steelhead runs. Never fished the Salmon River till just a...

Fly fishing for brown trout off Flat Rock in front of Fort Ontario in the spring is always fun.

Re: Should I go cheap on the first build?

I think you should build what you want. If you take the mind set of first building a cheap rod because it is only going to be awful then it will turn out awful. Don't set yourself up for failure by...

Re: Switch rod building for a Noob.

That is a Lemke reel seat. I was able to get a raw aluminum seat and I anodized it black and red myself to match my wraps. You can easily build yourself a cork lathe using a power drill.

Re: Switch rod building for a Noob.

I love my Batson 7wt Switch. It is the first rod I have built and it was a blast. Like another member already pointed out they are rated as single handed rods. So the 7wt is really a 5'ish wt witch...

I grew up in central NY( Salmon River was my home waters). My sister and brother in law now live in Hamburg NY( just outside of Buffalo but you may know that already). I spent a week with them back...

Re: Salmon river NY and switch rods ?

The 9' is where it will hurt you. You can fish just fine with it and I have done like you a couple of years ago with a 9' 8wt. and caught fish. Last year I used my buddies 10'6" 8wt and could not...

Re: Reels from China :-) on eBay

I have that same reel in a 8wt. For the $25 I paid for it a year ago who can complain. After a little internet research I found the overseas source for all of the eBay reels. I believe the cost for...

Re: What do I really need in a fly reel?

I would buy Okuma's SLV's all day long. They have a great drag that can stop trains if needed, look great and you can get them for $50 bucks or less! If anyone says a $300 reel is better I dare them...

Thanks Dan.....it's really just about knowing what your limitations are and staying within them. When I decided I wanted to build my own rod I first did a ton of research....and then I did some more!...

Re: What you recommend for a 7wt reel?

I agree with the Okuma SLV...for the money you can not beat it. Sure it's a cast aluminum reel but the disk drag can stop anything. If you use it in salt just be sure to pull it apart when you get...

Re: looking not to break the bank

For the money you can NOT beat the Okuma SLV. It would still be a deal at 4 times the price!!! I have been stopping freight trains i.e. steelhead with mine fora long time. Spare spools are available...

Re: Carbon fiber when?

This won't be anything mass produced just a one off reel for myself. General layout is a carbon fiber open bore spool(3" dia x1" wide, 2" arbor), simple click pawl drag. I have the carbon fiber and...

Re: Carbon fiber when?

After a days worth of just running ideas in my head here is where I think I am going to start. I am in the planning stages of my next rod build. I could go with a 3/4 wt or a 5/6wt. I already have a...

Well shoot....I am needing a new reel for my next rod build. But I can't seem to locate an unanodized model so I can do my own custom anodizing on it. Now with all of this carbon fiber reel talk I...

Re: 5-Weight Revamp

Please do a test with your wrap epoxy before you get any father along using this thread. Most embroidery thread has silicone or some other type of lube on it. This will cause massive fisheyes in your...

Oh wow...Sage calls the 3800 CF a carbon fiber spool????? Looks like injection molded glass filled nylon to me! That is not "carbon fiber" in the sense that Pete is talking about. I am sure he is...

Re: Allen Trout II New Burnt Orange color!

Re: Rod wrapping devices ???

Iwasn't a fan of that type when I was looking to build my own wrapper. Seemed like if you had it to far off the work surface and applied to much pressure it would rise off the table. I stuck with a...
