Look for grab bags full of deer or elk hair. You'll get all of the deer or elk hair you need for a lot less than the actual prices. They're just the pieces that aren't the right size.

The way I do it is to get a big 1/2" piece of wool and stick it straight over the hook eye and clamp it down. This is a lot easier if there is anything to keep it from spinning right like leftover...

The wooly bugger is my go-to fly for almost everything. It can catch anything from sunfish to brookkies to pike.
