Re: Flies that make you go hummmm

The Royal Wulff works because it does. It's the emergent product of hundreds of years of iterative fly-tying. My own personal belief is that anything you tie with a peacock herl body and grizzly...

Re: Shenandoah Trip Report - August 15

The Shenandoah River is perfectly wade-able in many places. A Kayak is nice, but I've caught plenty of smallmouth wading down the center and casting to rocky bottomed spots.

Re: Shenandoah Trip Report - August 15

You can post any questions in here. I answer questions about the Shenandoah frequently, so I know others are interested.

Re: The Alabama Rig

To get around the single hook restriction in tournaments, anglers will only put a hook on the trailing lure. That's the one that gets hit 95% of the time anyway. You could easily do the same thing...

Re: Dealing with land owners

I'd include a picture of the family and a business card to let them know you're a decent law abiding citizen. I'd also suggest offering to take them fishing when/if they're in town.

Other than...

Re: Smartphone apps

If you use your iPhone to take pictures, make sure you have geotagging disabled. Your phone automatically imbeds your location via GPS into the header information of the image file unless you tell...

Re: Who has the strongest fly rod? Sage, Winston, Hardy?

Old Phillipson fiberglass is quite tough as well. But, not impossible to break if you fall on it wrong, unfortunately.

Re: Humbled

I personally find the spring creeks of the Driftless much easier to fish than freestone mountain streams. Mostly because you left off depth from your list. Trout that are actively feeding deep or...

Re: Beautiful day on a blue line

I love the pics. Nice brookie, btw. The further west you get from the triad, the better the fishing imho.

Re: Required to fence or post private property?

In most cases, landowners care about the lowest common denominator types. They don't want the jacka$$ on a 4-wheeler tearing up their property. They don't care so much about respectful...

Re: Humbled

When you're not getting risers to bite, and the takes you get aren't resulting in hook-ups, it's a sure sign that your fly or your presentation is wrong. Take a minute or an hour to observe the...

Shenandoah Trip Report - August 15

I went fishing with my brother on the eastern slopes of the Shenandoah on a popular stream Saturday morning. I knew it was going to be tough, so we were on the water fishing before 7:00 am. The...

A thread on solo-hiking safely would be well received. Feel free to start one.

Re: Spending a week around Smith Mountain Lake, VA

The Smith River is a great tailchase. It gets busy on the weekends, so I'd recommend going on a weekday. Call the power plant 276-629-2432 to get an updated recording of their generation schedule...

Re: In The Aftermath Of The Storm...

If you lose the contents of your fridge and freezer due to a storm, you can claim them on a home-owner's insurance policy. It might not be worth it if you don't meet the deductible, or you're...

Re: Czech nymphing the Driftless?

I've never heard of French nymphing before. Does it work with a weighted size 12 scud?

Re: Czech nymphing the Driftless?

Since the Driftless is predominantly skinny water, it's often easiest and best fished with a nymph under a big dry (hopper, foam beetle, etc) or indicator. You're usually making somewhat long casts...

Re: Bear Creek, "Driftless"? Region, Iowa: Opinions Wanted

I would highly recommend wearing an article of blaze orange while out on the streams that time of year.

Also, it's all shotguns in Iowa and the south half of Minnesota, so no worries about .223s.

Re: Bear Creek, "Driftless"? Region, Iowa: Opinions Wanted

Deer hunting season in Iowa is the first week or two of December, so you'll be fine.

Re: Bear Creek, "Driftless"? Region, Iowa: Opinions Wanted

I wanted to point out that the Minnesota Driftless is open year around in the state parks, which offer excellent wild brown and brook trout. Fishing is excellent year-round. It's only a short drive...
