Re: What is a 2 and 3 wt rod used for

I use a 7'6" 3wt on my local streams for trout when I want to throw dries or small (under size 10) wets/nymphs. Most of the trout are under 18 inches. I felt that a 5wt was too much rod and took some...

Re: Short 5wt Rod Length Suggestions/Thoughts?

I appreciate all the suggestions and comments. I guess a 7ft is not to short for a 5wt. Now it's just down to rod. I was looking at the 5 listed. I'm not sure about the Far & Fine. I know they were...

Re: Short 5wt Rod Length Suggestions/Thoughts?

Let me ask this another way. Is a 7ft too short for a 5wt?

Are any of the rods "better" than the others?

Short 5wt Rod Length Suggestions/Thoughts?

I'm looking to get a "true" 5wt short rod. 2 years ago I built what was advertised as a 5wt, but it is much closer to a 4 :( so I'm not happy with it. I'm looking at the following 5wt rods:

Grey's...

Build or Buy???

If you've seen my recent posts I was looking for advice on whether to go 10ft or switch. Well I decided to go switch, with the plan on building a TFO Deer Creek 5wt. I figure my budget without...

Re: Dry Flies on a Switch Rod?

After giving careful consideration to all of the posts in this and my other thread, I think I'm going to go with a switch rod. I think with the right line I'll be able to cast dry's when I want and...

Re: 10ft or Switch?

After giving careful consideration to all of the posts in this and my other thread, I think I'm going to go with a switch rod. Based on my budget, I'm going to build a 6wt based on a TFO Deer Creek...

Re: Dry Flies on a Switch Rod?

I'd be looking to use this on the Delaware and any other larger river. I'd probably use flies between sz 6 and sz 20. Mostly EHC and parachutes.

Re: 10ft or Switch?

I just want to be able to cover larger water. I'd probably use it 70% dry/20% streamer and 10% nymph.

Dry Flies on a Switch Rod?

I've got another post where I'm looking at recommendations between a 10ft rod and a switch rod. I guess my first question should be "Can you EFFECTIVELY" fish dries with a switch rod or is it...

10ft or Switch?

I'm looking to buy/build a long 6wt rod. One that I can use on rivers where the river is wide and it is hard to wade, like the Delaware. I'll probably not use it for steelhead since I have an 8wt for...

Re: tying on tippet rings

Silver +1 on the Davey Knot video. I never realized how easy it was to tie. I'll need to try it out on the stream.

Re: tying on tippet rings

I've found that the tippet ring has no effect on whether the line sinks of floats. If you look on Jason Borgers (or Gary's) site they use tippet rings at the end of the 4x so you don't lose line. I...

Re: tying on tippet rings

I think you may be correct on your points. This is what I do since I'm not prepared to carry a gauge to use on the stream to get everything accurate. I know it won't be perfect, but it woks well...

Re: tying on tippet rings

I would put a foot of 5x and then my 7x. If I was fishing 6x I wouldn't put on the 5x first. That's just me though. I'm sure others have different thoughts.

Re: tying on tippet rings

I do that because I know what the the leader size is at the ring. Otherwise it is a guess.

Re: tying on tippet rings

Yes, give or take. I just tie it on when I'm on the river depending upon conditions. If I'm fishing nymphs/wets it will be about a foot or two. If I'm fishing drys and I want a good drag free drift...

Re: tying on tippet rings

I don't cut any off. If I buy a leader, I buy a 7 1/2 ft 4x and tie it to the end of that. I also do that for my 9 ft 5wt leaders if I want to prolong their life.

If I make my own leader I follow...

Re: tying on tippet rings

I use the 2mm 24 gauge, but you could use the 3mm 22 or 23 gauge. I wouldn't go any bigger, but that's just my preference.

Re: tying on tippet rings

I usually use a hemostat, but I think next time I'll try the safety pin method. As an aside, I found the best place to buy tippet rings is from Fusion Beads. It is a jewelery supply site.

Fusion...

Re: Help!!! Facing a Crisis Alone!!!

The reason it's infinite is because, for me, they each have their uses. I use a 7'6" 5wt for my tree covered local creek in the winter when I'm throwing heavier flies. I use my 9' 5wt for fishing...

Re: Need Nymph Hook Suggestions

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I think I'm going to go with the curved hook, either the Daiichi 1760 or 1260. The 1260 (Saber 1707) is not 2xh whereas the 1760 is. I'm guessing it will be easier...

Re: Need Nymph Hook Suggestions

Hmm, you have me thinking :shocking:

What has your experience been with these hooks? Do they stay sharp? Do they flex a lot when you're tying? What percentage of the lot do you find unuseable?

Re: Kayak Fishing

On the negative side, I ended up abandoning kayak fishing for the following reasons:

1. Sit too low to the water
2. Constant line tangles on the kayak made for a frustrating experience
3. Hard...
