Re: Nymph Rigs

I fish each fly about a foot apart, and place my shot about six or eight inches ahead of the lead fly.

Re: Being Consistent

If you're doing everything right and still not consistently catching fish, I'd suggest you keep experimenting with patterns, weight, etc. It may just be that you're not tuned in precisely on what...

Re: Late fall/winter fishing

It can be a lot of fun, the streams are a lot less crowded and there seems to be a lot more wildlife- deer, coyotes, mink, otters, and others, and I'm often fishing with eagles spending the winter...

Re: Why I Fish, numbers vs. size?

I used to fish to clear my head, figuring if I did it long enough I'd arrive at some grand cosmic state of grace. Instead I learned it's hard to catch fish when your mind's somewhere else.

Re: Figured for sure ...

I had a similar problem- I would enter my username and password, and the page would load saying it was invalid.

I did that five times and was locked from the page, then finally went through the...

Re: what rods do our youth use

I bought a TFO Pro Series 9'0 7 wt. for smallmouth fishing one summer and broke it on the first trip out- rigging up. No fault of the rod, I was just excited and did the bonehead thing- stringing...

Batson Blanks

Hey folks,

I was looking into getting more into rod building, and wanted to build a couple rods on Batson blanks, basically because they're cheap and I'd feel comfortable practicing wraps, etc...

Re: Not sure if I've introduced myself, but hello from flyover country!

Thanks for the post Craig, I've heard a number of professionals already tell me the first job you get in this field will also be the most fun. I've also seen a number of biologists and professionals...

Re: Good beginner rod

I've heard a lot of good things about the new Imperials, and I've cast one at the shop. I like them, and they'd make a pretty good beginning fly rod.

For all purpose trout and warmwater angling...

Re: noel mo

I apologize if I poked a stick in anyone's eye, and I assure you I haven't taken offense to anything said. I think we're all on the same page, though- there's absolutely no reason and no sense in...

Re: Looking for Midge Options

You may also want to try brown, dun, or black Bivisibles, or fore-and-aft (knotted) midges

Re: What is a good age to start kids?

Fly-fishing?

It's hard to say, I guess it depends on the kid's maturity and attention span. I think the biggest thing would be tailoring an educational program so it's fun for them.

I'd...

Re: noel mo

I don't want to get too political, but that's an awfully broad brush-stroke. The Ozarks are an economically depressed region, and suffer many of the issues and blights of economically depressed...

Re: Newbie With lots fo questions

A 9wt reel will work, but the weight of a reel that size will make the balance of the rod, reel, and line funky, and may impair casting.

Re: Vest Suggestions?

I'm about the same way, Yatahey...I have enough line control issues without having to worry about bulging pockets, zippers, velcro, and all the little danglydowns...

Truthfully, I'm not sure what...

Re: Not sure if I've introduced myself, but hello from flyover country!

I actually have a friend who spends his summers working for the Forest Service in Alaska, and I may be doing that next May.

Other than that I applied to graduate school in Vermont and Utah, and...

Vest Suggestions?

The thread on lanyards got me thinking...I'm going to need a new vest come this spring. I've grown out of my current hand-me-down, plus it has entirely to many pockets, pouches, and zippers for it's...

Re: lanyards

Fly boxes are a deeply personal issue, as MP said, it's best if you buy or check out a handful of them and decide what you like...

For me, my nymphs and streamers go into soft foam, Morell-type...

Not sure if I've introduced myself, but hello from flyover country!

Hey folks, I registered on the site a few months ago but just became truly "active," so I figured I'd say hello.

I'm Tom, I'm 24 years old and an avid fly-fisherman from St. Louis, Missouri. I...

Re: shoes - Yes

Those look like a pretty good deal, I like how light they are. As Strother said, the rubber soles won't grip slick rocks as well, but are easier to clean and maintain.

Re: Nets

I like the newer plastic "ghost mesh." It's a clear, soft-plastic mesh which is supposed to be less obvious to fish than the standard black nylon mesh, reducing stress and helping make landing...

Re: noel mo

The Elk River still fishes pretty well for smallmouth and goggle-eye, and the high water the past few seasons should mean fishing will just get better in five years or so. There's been lots of...
